Linux lost files in ubuntu

hi

I used following command in ubuntu

gconftool-2 --shutdown
gconftool --recursive-unrest /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel

i used this command to recover missing task bar and taskbar icons.Apperently i got the missing taskbar.but unfortunately i lost my desktop icons,folders,mails everything deleted.Now pls help me out how can i recover those file...pls ...pls. i am totaly blank now

files not there in desktop as well as home folder.I lost thunderbird mails also
