Yep that's right! Announced at Captivate, Rome last week, catch the trailer to the sequel below:

The third iteration is NOT developed by Capcom but Spark Unlimited, a relatively lesser known developer who has outed few titles which weren't well received. Moreover, LP 2 did not garner enough praise as the first one did.

The game is slated for release during 2013 for the X360 and PS3! Good luck Capcom!

Lost Planet 3: ‘only one playable mech in single-player campaign’ – Capcom | VG247

“As the Lost Planet 3 mech – the Utility Rig – is designed as a piece of construction equipment, used to help build and maintain the colony,” Szymanski explained, “That’s exactly what Jim has been sent to the planet to do, and initially Jim – and the player – will be using it for that purpose.”

It won’t all be handiwork and maintenance however, as Szymanski discussed, “Soon after arriving, however, Jim and the player will need to improvise to use the tools on the Rig to fight attacking Akrid. One of the key features of Lost Planet 3 is the dichotomy between being out of the Rig – in which Jim uses standard firearms – and inside of it – where Jim must use its construction tools to defeat enemies in melee combat.”

“We like that this turns standard convention on its head,” Szymanski added, “Also, crushing giant insects with a massive drill never gets old.”

But giving Jim one single Rig throughout the single player campaign gives rise to upgrade trees and a sense of ownership over the vehicle. This means that players should feel more obliged to protect it, rather than the expendable Rigs found in Lost Planet 2.

Szymanski continued, “For the single-player campaign, Jim – and the player – will only be using one Rig. This is important as that Rig is Jim’s personal property and it factors in very heavily to the narrative. That is not to say that other mechs won’t appear piloted by other characters, however.”

Damn it. :(

Kotaku says the campaign is 12 hours long and is playable FWIW. It is different from the last title which was more of a UT type campaign.

Started the title yesterday after almost a month-long hiatus! Couldn't play for long though. Just the initial bits for about 15 minutes or so.

The start felt so much like Dead Space. Over-the-shoulder view, minimal HUD, location markers etc.

I sincerely hope this brings back the good memories of the first game - plenty of Akrid battles, VS boss battles etc. :(

Played a bit more yesterday and I figured out why the critics gave it a low score. The game feels like a Dead Space rip-off and although the plot is linear, the kind of objectives makes our protagonist more of an errand boy. There are a lot of RPG elements thrown in as well.

Go to location X, plant this transponder, report back to me. Go to location Y, save Mr. ABC, report back to me. Go to location Z, repair the trams, report back to me. The ‘me’ here is the boss of the unit. At least this has been the case with the 3 hour playthrough yesterday. :(

The good thing is, the Akrid design is pretty cool just like the first game, the ice-laden level designs are refreshing and the protagonist has access to a good arsenal and a mighty Utility Rig. Although only three guns (a pistol with infinite ammo, an assault rifle, a shotgun) have been unlocked right now, the slots indicate that there are several more in store. Upgrades can be done to the suit (reminds me of Dead Space), the Utility Rig and the guns using T-Eng.

There is a big difference in the gameplay from the first title though - unlike the first one wherein we had access to the VS (Vital Suits) with user-interchangeable weapons on both arms, this one has a UR (Utility Rig) which is a bigger and beefier variant of the VS but with no weapons. Instead we get a mechanized claw arm and a drill arm since weapons weren’t permitted as per NEVEC safety norms. I so miss the interchangeable weapons part. Using the chain gun to grind through the Akrid was so much fun! But besides, this is a prequel to the first title so that probably explains how the mighty URs gave way to smaller VSs with weapons to combat Akrid forces. Moreover, NEVEC is on our side in this title.

Done with the title. The end-game save file shows 13 hours and 31 minutes. That was on the Normal difficulty btw.

As for the game, I personally believe it wasn't that bad as the reviews deem it to be. More like a 7 on 10 would have been a decent score. There were a few niggles - for instance, the inability to fast travel between locations previously visited. Although fast travel is unlocked after a few hours into the game, we can't use it at our discretion and have to wait for the prompt to appear. And have to travel a great distance on the UR which is painfully slow at times. Story and the progression wasn't great but I believe this has laid a good foundation for the first title. Combat was good especially with the UR.

I have faith in Spark Unlimited - if they could develop this one so well, they could do much better titles in the future. Had this been from one of the bigshot devs., the review scores would have been completely different I bet!

Completed on three sittings, yesterday evening's being the lengthiest clocking at some 6 hours odd! Crashed at 2 in the morn today. :p
