hi,
i need a pc with low power consumption(cos of frequent power outages).
i was planning to get an atom base pc but heard it's very slow.my main uses will be web surfing and watching videos and maybe playing a few older games.
thanks

look for sempron 140 processor from amd,one can unlock the extra core in that or else

you could go for athlon X2 240

have a look at the following

15" LCD - AOC - 4.9k

Asus M2N68-AMPLUS - 2.4k

Sempron 140 Processor - 1.9k

DVD Writer - 1k

Zebronics Singh Cabinet with SMPS - .9k

Logitech Keyboard and Mouse set - .7k

2GB DDR2 RAM - 1.9k

250 GB SATA HD - 2k

i got this suggestion from vinodh89

Total - 15.8k

OR

AMD Athlon II - 240(2.9k) + Biostar A785GE(3.2k) - 6.1k

2GB Transcend 800MHz DDRII RAM - 1.9k

250GB Seagate 7200.12 HDD- 1.9k(Not much difference b/w 160GB and 250GB prices)

LG/Samsung DVD R/W - 1.1k

Zebby cabinet with PSU - 1.4k

Logitech KB+Mouse - 0.6k

Acer 19" - 6.2k

Cost ~18k

Got this suggestion from karthi007

your pick ;)

Are u planning to make future upgrades,or is it a BUY It,FORGET It sort of system  ?

then go for the 2nd config,if you want it to be a little futureproof,go for a entry level ddr3 motherboard and ddr3 ram :cool2:

get this, the onboard HD4200 will do casual games too

Come beginning of next year there will be a slew of low power consumption cpu's from both Intel and AMD

Mobile 32nm Core i5, Core i7 chips from Intel next year

13 November 2009 21:39

The first 32nm desktop processors is coming in just a few weeks. The circuit known as Clarkdale, targeting desktop users. The equivalent circuit for the mobile market is dubbed Arrandale and will debut in the first half of 2010. Intel will announce three Arrandale processors for the notebook market, bringing both low power consumption and rigorous performance.

Update: An error had slipped into the table, but it has now been corrected. Ed.

The three models will be part of both the Core i5 and Core i7 Mobile families with base frequencies just north of 1GHz, which may sound a bit weak but thanks to the Turbo Boost technology it will nearly double when applications and power supply allows.

The processors sport dual cores and an integrated GPU that will reduce the overall power consumption of the system. The three models will be part of the Calpella platform and are expected to be as follows:

Core i7 640UM

2C/4T
1,20GHz
2,26GHz
4MB
18W

Core i7 620UM
2C/4T
1,06GHz
2,00GHz
4MB
18W

Core i5 520UM
2C/2T
1,06GHz
2,00GHz
4MB
18W

Price will be 305 USD, 278 USD and 241 USD in quantities of 1000. We hope to see the first processors in Q1 already since Intel really has something interesting coming for the mobile market.

2009-11-10 First 32nm Intel processors on December 10th

2009-10-23 32nm Arrandale Celeron processor coming

2009-10-22 32nm Clarkdale Core i5-650 CPU reaches 4.7GHz with air cooling

2009-10-16 AMD goes 32nm SOI with Fusion GPU-CPU

2009-09-28 Intel designs new cooler for 32nm hexa-core Gulftown

I am in the same boat, want to retire my P3 rig (mainly used to torrents)which consumes around 80W and can't play 720P properly; compared to my new rig brought last year which consumes around 110W at idle...so not good for 24x7 use..

Not sure if power conso is a big concern for u like me but still can point u to some really good sites abt low power rig and undervolting things:
silentpcreview.com | Everything about Silent / Quiet Computers
and visit their forums
silentpcreview.com | View topic - Biostar A760G-M2+ - 30W barrier broken

Currently I am waiting for i3 which believe can provide a best balance between performance and power consumption...let see
Also some people might say ion platform is best suited for low power rig but its fuking expensive ...come on ~10k for MB + CPU :@

Meanwhile let us know if u come across any thing good :cool2:

CPU+MOBO+RAM+CABINET+HDD+DVD Writer+Monitor

Proccy- AMD AthlonII X2 240 - 2.9k
M/B- Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2 - 5.9k
Ram- Transcend/Corsair 2GB 1333MHz DDRIII -2.6k
HDD- Seagate 500GB 7200.12 SATA 3.5" -2.5k
Cabinet- Zebronics Bijili cabby with SMPS - 1.7k
Optical Drive: L.G. GH22NS30 SATA/Samsung SH-S22F SATA - 1.1k
Monitor : Benq G2200HD - 8k
Total - 24.7k

Even though this rig costs more by 2k still it is futureproof for further DDR3 performance rams in future.

When u are spending 14.5k on a pc u would obviously want this pc to be futureproof and last for 2 years minimum

thanks for the info srirama and anubis.since i cant wait till next year,i'll be getting this config-
Proccy- AMD AthlonII X2 240 - 2.9k
M/B- Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2 - 5.9k
Ram- Transcend/Corsair 2GB 1333MHz DDRIII -2.6k
HDD- Seagate 500GB 7200.12 SATA 3.5" -2.5k
Cabinet- Zebronics Bijili cabby with SMPS - 1.7k
Optical Drive: L.G. GH22NS30 SATA/Samsung SH-S22F SATA - 1.1k

since i will be using my sony w550a as a monitor will i need anything else.

2009-10-16 AMD goes 32nm SOI with Fusion GPU-CPU

This is gonna be something

Well the first FUSION is gonna be 40nm BOBCAT core..

Yeah, that's a 40nm Athlon II X4 + 40nm HD5000 GPU with 480 Stream Processors......on the same chip...a total of nearly 1 billion transistors..

not all that much,ddr3 ram operates on lower voltages than ddr2 ,so the increase in power consumption would be negligible
