I know its quite funny to compare a everyday laptop to a "powerhouse", But I'm having difficulty in making a choice between the two, I hope i can get your help from here.

my first choice was the MacBook Pro retina 2012 model(refurbished) ~ $1820 AUD (base model)
second was Macbook Pro Air 13" (new) ~ $1290 AUD (Base model)

between the two i understand that the MBP is faster and in many ways isnt supposed to be even compared with the macbook air. However, the Macbook Air offers better value for money between than the other.

I will need this laptop mainly for the following
1)coding
2)graphic design(high)
3)photoshoping(moderate)
4)video editing(moderate)

in my opinion, even after specing up the MBA.. it wouldn't come very close to the MBP in terms performance, and at the price the MBP seems to be a steal. but the catch is that, I'd like to save as much as possible. But not at the cost of productivity.

I will be using the machine for about 2 years or so

I need a MacBook ONLY cus of the course requirement.

If you need performance then forget about "Max book" :). Go with Retina but that is due for an upgrade. I am awaiting it too.

Any news when the Update for the MBP retina version
I am getting a good deal on 256 ssd model

Rumour is that Macbook Retina upgrade won't be announced in today's event, instead it would be announced separately in Oct 2013.
