Hi everyone,

A problem has cropped up with my Macbook (Late 2009). The screen fades to white and I have to externally push the lcd to get it right. Then again it starts fading to white. Usually it happens 5 mins after boot up.
This is the exact problem as shown in the following video:

YouTube - MacBook screen fades to white

YouTube - MacBook Pro Display Inversion and Blank Out

I have the Apple Care for Laptop and therefore I gave it for repair. The (Redington India) service repair guy tells me that he sent over pictures of my laptop to some Apple guys over chat who mentioned that there some liquid / water was found in the laptop. This has not been the case whatsoever. They have refused to repair the laptop. I gave a call at Apple technical support (Toll free was not working). This guy tells me that they are in no position to repair the laptop since the service provider has mentioned that there is water / liquid in the laptop and therefore it also voids my Apple Care.

The last resort he mentioned was to give it to another service provider in my city (Lucknow) and see if they report some other issue and then they might consider the case.

I don't know what my next step should be. Thankfully Lucknow has another Apple Service provider which I would be going to next and see what they have to say. I am at an absolute loss of words. The problem is really widespread. Few links I could copy are pasted at the end.

Kindly suggest what should I do. Consumer Court?

Thanks

Apple seems to be proud of their customer support but after reading this post....

i think consumer court is the last option for u

good luck

Call Apple support, ask them to escalate to a supervisor. Tell the supervisor that there was no liquid damage and that it's a known problem with Macbooks and that you demand a replacement.

The service providers are frickin' retards and will try to avoid providing free service as far as possible.

Also link the supervisor to threads from the Apple support forum showing instances that the display has been replaced previously.

Lost count on how many times I have heard this. This is a very common tactic that service center guy's (especially in India) use to deny warranty on Mobiles, Laptops and any thing else electronic with a display in general. This was extensively and consistently used by Service centers of companies like Nokia, Samsung and HTC to deny or void warranty. I think these people are very well trained to use such tactics even if they don't know how to repair stuff.

Apple is also one such company that is extensively known to deny/void warranty on Laptops and iPhone's and iPods by randomly quoting liquid damage (even in the international arena). Google "Apple claim liquid damage" and you will see what I mean. Any problem that warrants major repair/replacement and be ready to hear them claim liquid damage.

If Escalation does not help, then you should definitely consider the legal route. Do make it clear to them from the start because sometimes that helps as well.

they are good if you push them.my friend got his imac replaced twice.you just have to quote the facts and do it in a decent manner[with a lil patience].their process is pretty lengthy i will definately agree with that.

I suggest all you guys to beware of Apple ASS.

It will seriously kick your ass that badly when you learn this.

I worked at apple mumbai main ass centre for nearly a yr.

We used to sell daily atleast 2 desktops and 2 laptops apart from dozens of ipods.

Whenever any customers come with his ipod or laptop for any issue, he was asked to wait for as long as an hr or two.

Now during this waiting period, the ass guy would rip off his product and replace his any working parts with some other previous customers product to speed up the service process and make an impression of servicing the product on the same day in mind of the customer.

And the other guy whose parts were replaced was told that it might take a day or two to rectify the issue hence you will receive a call as soon as the issue gets sorted.

Accordingly, he either get s brand new replacement part or one from similar jhol-jhals.

Those products parts were replaced having lots of warranty remaining with the one whose warranty period is about to expire or if the customer is a HI PROFILE one or a PRIORITIZED one. Many a times in this process poor customers get used parts from other persons item claiming that its a brand new one and carrys xyz warranty which they simply void themselves on his another visit again.:S

This was the case of ipods & laptop/macbooks.

In desktop dept--. the apple macpro machines state was more horrifying.

There are almost 5 new systems for servicing/replacing parts with many pending since past 10days.

So here too the mobo/gfx card/ram and even hdd (lacies too) were replaced freely with one another just to give the customer a feel of good and quick service satisfaction. Thus, poor customer actually sometime looses on his warranty or even gets a defective product in the name of this kind of replacements inside. These guys even play with serial nos. of these parts.:@ wtf??

They have their own so called favorite customers to whom they offer a real good service by instantly replacing their parts with a genuine ones & not by this kind of hera-pheri.

^Happens all the time.

This is the reason why every one should prefer dell due to direct parts disbursement! Not the mention the superb service!

When i gave my n82 for service, the guy told me to "keep my phone for checking" and he will get back to me if there is any water damage.

I told him nothing doing, if you say you there is a chance that there is water damage, i want the phone opened in front of me, once you ensure its in warranty and i get the memo, you can keep it.

After a long debate he agreed, the engineer opened it, there were few water marks up front, but nothing on the board.

If you insist hard enough and play it cool, you can easily bend them to your wishes. Play good customer bad customer with them :P

@Ronit
Why don't apple have replacement parts handy at the store/service center?

Coz they need to be ordered from the HO at Bangalore which takes anything between 3 days to a week or even more even if they dont have it handy.

Similar case happens with me. I had my nano and the screen had some dust particles from inside. I took it to the service center and they bluntly rejected to repair or rma it. (Well the dust particle was just a reason, I wanted a new ipod:P)

Anyway I called the customer care and got it transfered to Australia. The guy asked me to send the pics of the screen and I did the same. Few days later he mailed me some ID No which I had to show it to the service center.

When I went again they refused, only after I showed them the mail they agreed to accept it :P Got a spanking new ipod later (which is sold now :P)

Try your luck with customer support head office maybe that can help.

Well I too am really satisfied with Dell replace policy. Its clean.

Though I am using two apple products as of now and the build quality of the products are great but I am shocked and amazed with the kind of service these guys are providing.

As for the OP. Try to get something in writing from local Apple service center. Go with a formal complaint letter(in-duplicate) and get it stamped and signed by them. Looking at your seriousness I am sure they will accept your complaint.

If they still don't accept the complaint raise the issue to higher authorities. And if that doesn't work then only look for a consumer court option.

well,i had a similar experience with my nano 2nd gen.there was no audio in one channel.i gave it for service,at the same shop where i bought it.the salesman tried to play around with me,but i was firm and he sent it.he gave an eta of 2 weeks :S .3 weeks later,i got it back, and i checked in the shop, the audio was fine.when i got home, same issue.
went back the next day,and he sent it.another two weeks later,i went back, and they tried to avoid me.gave all sorts of excuses.then,i did a little hoo-haa,cursed them a bit, made a scene etc.finally, almost everyone in the showroom gathered around and seeing their reputation in danger, they gave me a new ipod, sealed box.i took the thing, walked into another store, and sold the 2nd pair of earphones i got for a decent sum, only good thing which came off the whole trouble.
