Hello everyone,
I was just wondering, why there isn't an auction thread in the market section? Why is auctioning of the items not allowed on TE?

IMO, people who wish to sell stuff should also have an option to auction it in the market section, or maybe a separate sub forum for auctions alone. The seller can specify the starting bid, increment from previous bid and also a 'buy it now' price if he wishes. The auction will end if no new bids for 24 or 48 hrs. Such kind of auctions are implemented in domain forums.

I believe it will fetch the best price for the seller and also people need not worry about not knowing to price their products spot on. Items will sell for what they deserve on the market.

What do you guys think?

More than a tech forum and a community, TE will be just a market place and nothing more if auctions are allowed. Market here is just a priviledge to the member, why exploit that.

Just my 2 cents.

Yep, you got a point there. TE is one of a kind, I've never seen such a wonderful and active tech community in India.

The reason I suggested this was that I see many transactions happening in the TE market which is amazing, and having auctions might help a few less knowledgeable people in selling, as they do not need to worry if they're asking for too much, or too little. :)

Problem with auctions IMO is that people list at a low price to attract bidding (for eg. Re 1) and then chicken out when they find they have to sell at Rs 100. Which is a waste of time for all involved in the bidding process.

There would be a lot of crap flying around and it would be a pain to moderate, is what I feel.

TE is foremost a Tech community and market is only for members to sell their excessive hardware
Remember TE doesnt take any reponsibility for deals happening on Market.
If auctions are added, then it will cause lots of issue and Market feeback section will be overcrowded with conflict threads :bleh:

We dont want TE to become Ebay
my 2c

Thanks guys for your inputs.

I think you're right, the auctions will need to be very strictly and closely moderated to keep them clean, and there maybe cases when the winning bidder refuses to buy or the seller refusing to sell for the final bid he got.

It could be tedious job for the moderators. I never thought it that way :ashamed:

Lets take a case when two people are selling the same thing.

Seller A: Opteron XYZ; Auction Price: 100; Actual worth: 110

Seller B: Opteron XYZ; Auction Price: 100; Actual worth: 110

Now seller B is unethical, a cheat and a backstabber. He will either create a new ID or ask one of his friends to bid 140 for the Seller A item.

Seller A is very happy and is waiting for his payment. Meanwhile Seller B can say that he has the same item for 120 and is willing to sell it immediately.

So effectively he has undercut seller A's sale and yet made a quick profit. Derailed seller A's entire sale attempt as he will never get that money since its a fake deal.

The market crumbles down for honest buyers and sellers.

This is not a hypothetical case and people like seller B were plenty on TE earlier. Thankfully all of them have moved out to some other forum. TE has been a much better place since then. :)

No auctions on TE needed. But as Renegade pointed out this trick, i suppose access to that (currently non-existent) auction section can be given only to members who have say 50+ (or whatever number) posts in the forum.

But yes auction area is not needed. Most of the people know what is the right price for a particular product and would pawn the seller if the price demanded is unreasonable

If u want auctions -Go to ebay india.......One of the worst places to buy/Sell. auction------->lot of cheating:@ its phail idea on TE

[OT]
^^ Dont agree with that part. Ebay is a fairly decent place to buy/sell if you are a little careful.

And about the auction bit -> Havent tried India but the UK/US ones work just fine (at least in my experience).

Hey, we lowball & crap threads, even when seller says lowball in PM only. Compare with auction?

I too thought auction was needed here at TE but after thinking about the negative points i guess auction is a definite no no....

Dude Seriously, this will be a difficult situation. I have seen few people who have multiple ID's on ebay. sounds tensed area for me.
