Forum Feedback Member Feedback : New Users access to Market section?

why newbies should not be allowed instant market access after joining:
* To avoid people from creating new ids for lowballing other sales and promoting their sale items.
* To discourage leeching. If member are joining for market then it reflects as leeching...thereby reducing market opportunities for existing loyal and contributing member.

This will hamper the actual seller as eddy mentioned but i suppose a loyal and genuine member can always deal with another loyal genuine member with peace of mind. Atleast both the members involved in deal will have some sense of ethics while dealing and would be familiar with rules and regulations. a new member who is always allowed instant market access wouldn't care about all this and would simply create another id in case if he is in trouble.

an alternative i have in mind is better use of referral/invitation system.
as in, TE would not put market restrictions on the member which were invited or referred by other existing senior/reputable members (or whatever criteria has been set for the same).

Quality over Quantity anyday. Believe me, I'd like a TE with say 50 members actively participating in discussions than 300 people just trading in second hand goods to their heart's content. There are other forums to trade in second hand goods too. This is not the only place.

It's not like people did not buy or sell a computer part before visiting the market place. Even if they did not, it's not a big deal. They can always go to a computer reseller and ask him to buy back their old comps.

Yes indeed, but the problem is that TE is not an ecommerce website. And even if it is, we are yet to hear an announcement from admins about it.

Like any other forum I believe TE too wants members but growth should not come at the cost of quality. I believe people who are not passionate about technology, who don't want to discuss technology and who have no drive to learn and share technologies do not belong here.

And that's perfectly alright. Nobody wants you to worship your computer. If you are not that "kind of guy," that's not the end of the world. go join Funenclave, Facebook, Orkut, Ebay or any other website that suits you.

I believe TE grew not because of its markets (though that helped too) but because of its quality members. At least, nowadays I come here to see what guys like cranky, harshal, bikey, shripad, eddy, darkstar, pixelpusher and all you brilliant guys (you know who you are) are saying. Without these members, there is no difference between Digit or TE or TE and Techtree.

My point is simple, markets can win you a lot of members but at the end of the day, it's the quality members who matter.

I second that. The only reason that made me so addictive to TE and a part of it is the the knowledge shared by some of the elite members. It just makes me come back again and again.

Some of the old guides, tutorials and reviews are a delight to read. The overall quality of posts, discussions and debates was on a totally different level altogether.Miss all that .:(

Slightly different opinion here ...

1) Number of posts limit should not be there for posting in market section ( since people will spam all the threads they can to achieve the minimum number of posts).

2) A Member should be recommended by atleast three other members ( ie atleast three other members should trust him ) , then only he can start a thread in market section.

3) He should be member for at least a month ( this will prevent members joining only for trading)

I would say recommendation is a must for allowing to post in market section especially for selling threads

As soon as they join TE.
If a new member is only interested in the market, let them make a bee-line for it and then promptly get lost, instead of spamming to meet the requirements.
