I need to merge two video CDs into one DVD. The resultant video DVD should be playable on a DVD player. The data in the CD is in .dat format. Any pointers or guides will be appreciated.

Also, is it possible to extract only the audio track from the video CD file?

Copy the dat files, rename to mpeg. Extract audio using virtualdub.

If you want to convert t dvd, use windows dvd maker/nero/movie maker.

That simple, eh..? Rename .dat to .mpeg..! I never knew it was so easy. Will try out whatever you have mentioned.

Yup. VCD .dat files are MPEG-1 files. Dunno if virtualdub support mp3 extraction, I opened the program, the options were not there. Been too long since I used it. However, WAV extraction seems to be present.

#[member='logistopath'], it will better if you make a DVD out of the CD. Also the output quality will be better the the dat files.

You can use Nero Vision, Ulead DVD movie creator, to add the dat files and make a dvd out of those

Not true. This is similar to converting a 320 kbps .mp3 file to a lossless format such as .FLAC and expecting the same quality as that of the original .FLAC rip from an audio CD.

Higher res video in dvd, are better then dat video. Also the audio quality will improve

Dude that is just not possible! I am not sure how can I make you understand. If the quality of the parent file itself is poor (audio or video), it will not improve even if you burn it to a DVD or a blu-ray.

You could however prove me wrong by citing an example from some link otherwise.

Higher res video in DVD are better than .DAT video provided the source is better / uncompressed but in this case, the source is DAT so, there won't be any improvement in the quality.

The technique of upscaling can be used though but CD quality video would produce artifacts.

You can use Nero or try this handy list of DVD authoring tools: http://www.techsuppo...ng-software.htm

True. Pixed information or bitrate, which is missing in the first place can only be mimicked but cannot be created.

Thanks guys..! I finally managed to combine the contents of 4 video CDs on to a DVD. It was the video of my brother's wedding. My parents are very happy..

I copied the avseq.dat files from each CD onto my PC, and then renamed them into .mpg, as mentioned above.

Using DVD Flick I created a DVD .iso with those .mpg files, along with a very basic menu.

Used imgburn to burn the .iso on a DVD.

P.S: Ignored the audio extraction part. It was not needed. Also, Windows Movie Maker could only save the movies into .wmv format. There was no option to create a DVD. I later found that we need Windows DVD Creator for the same, and that it was available in the premium and other higher versions of Vista/ Win 7 only.

i've always seen that these wedding video shooting guys are technologically backwards. they shoot with old vhs cameras or some outdated video camera. and give vcd's instead of dvd's. dumb people. i've seen better hd cams in some of the audiences hands.

i totally agree.. . people, to have better quality, a better source is needed. if we do not have a good source, how do we expect to improve the quality no matter what format we convert to.. this is digital data... not analogue signals which we can just amplify using some amplification device..

for making video dvds, even i recommend using nero.. just selecting the video dvd format and dragging and dropping the files will do the job. if theres any format conversion needed, nero will do it automatically. and you can even make custom thumbnail menus if you like..
