The Micromax A110 (a.k.a. Canvas 2) is the most popular phone in our database and it just got a successor. Meet the Micromax A116 Canvas HD – a dual-SIM Android phone with a 5” 720p IPS screen, quad-core processor and affordable price.

The 5" screen is a marked improvement over the A110 – the new model has 294ppi pixel density, up from 196ppi. The chipset is a big step forward too, the MediaTek MT6589 packs a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM and the PowerVR Series 5XT GPU.

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (with a 4.2 update to come), packs an 8MP main camera and VGA front-facing camera and has 4GB of built-in storage (plus a microSD card slot). Connectivity is handled by 3G GSM, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth and GPS. The battery capacity is 2,100mAh.

The Micromax A116 will launch in India next month for 15,000 rupees.

I am guessing I will have try out one of these VFM offerings sooner or later. With those specs and that price it makes a complete no brainer over offerings from other international brands.

The guys who tried it at the scene, weren't that impressed.. Laggy and unresponsive capacitive buttons.. But that could be for the preview version...

We are seeing a new canvas phone every month, but this time i guess it has some serious spec bump from an indian manufacturer.

I was just talking to some friends the other day and I said that if MMX comes up with a phone similar to Note/Note2, they would launch it in the ~17k range.

It is not AMOLED, but any half-decent 720p screen is win.

Awesome specs! When I first saw the chipset, I was worried because of the four cortex A7 cores and thought it was nothing but a marketing gimmick that provided the same performance as a dual core cortex A9 chipset. However, reading this article has alleviated those fears.

EDIT: Another great point found in that article:

A neat new feature is that the processor now has a dual active radio. What this means is that when you take a call on one sim card, the other sim card is still active and can accept or make calls as well. This is something that was lacking from previous Mediatek Processors.

Finally 1 GB Ram (which should have been in Canvas A110) and Power VR 5X
This phone has all the right parts. Just hoping launches soon and includes pen device like the note

Well, the phone will itself be the size of the Galaxy S3, with specifications not that far off and a price of exactly half the S3. I see a great device my Miromax. Hope they bring a 4.5" version of the same (dual core and Jelly Bean, or quad core) to bring more option. Most probably the Micromax A96 Pixel HD

There have been two iterations of the AMOLED 'Pixel' phone by Micromax. The A90 and the A90s. The former had a single core processor while the s variant had a dual core MediaTek chipset.

The third one will probably have hardware specifications comparable to the A116 along with (at least) a qHD 4.5 inch AMOLED panel.
