Microsoft Kinect Teardown - iFixit

I was very interested in knowing what machine vision tech they were using since I have myself worked in the area during my college days. While I could see that they there were more than one camera on the device even in the early pre release demos, I earlier thought they were using two color cameras for depth perception using stereo vision. But this is not the case and probably for the best. There is only one color camera and the second one is an IR Camera which will work in conjunction with a IR emitter to create a depth map for the environment. Do note that using IR is nothing new to the area is rather a pretty old trick in the book.

While I think this is a much better method than just using visible spectrum, but there are cons to this method as well. While Playstation Move's accuracy is dependent on good lighting in the room, Kinnect's accuracy would be dependent on the composition of the lighting as well. I think any kind of secondary IR source (even bright incandescent/florescent light, sun light, or any IR rich light) can mess up the IR based depth map, rendering Kinnect into nothing more than an uber costly and over sized Webcam. Considering that Kinnect has an insane price tag of over 9k in India, I would suggest prospective buyers to be mindful about the room environment where they intend to use it.

Both Move and Kinnect have their strong and weak points, but purely from a tech perspective, I think Move has a much better approach and its a much more practical approach as well from a price perspective.

Poor Body Detection and high price makes it a fail in comparison to PS Move.

The same can be said of Kinect as a whole in fact; it has a number of highlights, but it frankly isn’t worth the price. We played every single one of the currently available games and were left with similar sentiments that, in our experience, most gamers now have of the Wii. It’s great to wheel out when you’re having a get together, but it’ll likely lay gathering dust for most of the time and the short term fascination that comes immediately after buying one isn’t really indicative of actual quality.

Despite the poor reviews, it has sold more than a million units already! :P

Since I've been looking up prices of all these motion gaming accessories, here is what I found regarding the pricing issue -

Move Starter Pack retails for $99.99. But it also requires an additional Navigation Controller ($29.99) for optimum gaming experience, or even a second Motion Controller ($49.99). Since Move starter packs have been discontinued by Sony and you can get Move accessories either with the 320GB bundle, or individually [Move controller $49.99, Camera $39.99, and extra Navigation controller ($29.99). Either way you approximate spending will come up to $120-130.

On the other hand Kinect simply sucks out a one time price of $150.

These facts are out there, staring us right in the face. Yet we don't see it because $99.99 is after all perceived as "under $100" and $150 seems a bit too high.

Comparable pricing, but comparable performance?

The problem with Kinnect is the price tag. There is no arguing against the fact that both Move and Kinnect have the novelty factor going for them, but at the end of the day, if you are going to spend nearly as much as a wee bit shy of a full XBOX 360 Arcade console for just an accessory, then it better work and work it should flawlessly. Move at least has the excuse that it costs only a bit higher than a DS3 Controller and even if it doesn't work out as expected, it can at least double up as a high quality web cam for the PC.

Edit: Just to add, I am considering the Indian prices for the comparison here. Move Starter Pack costs 3.4k and Kinnect costs 9.5k. Even if I add the cost of a Navigation controller or a second Motion controller, the price works out to less than 5.2k~5.6k. That is still less than 60% the price of Kinnect.

Look at the titles released for the Kinect. Mostly made for partying folks. Unlike the Move which caters to both the serious as well as casual gamers.

I still recall the E3 event when they showcased the Kinect. It was a complete disaster with the entire crowd being silent. Whereas the Move drew some crowd.

In this price comparision of yours have you factored in the Price of additional Units required for multiplayer gaming?
I had a Wii and all these 'Motion sensitive' games were fun only when you were playing in a group or atleast competing with another person locally. The same tenet holds true for Kinect as well as Move.
So if we factor in the price for the additional units of move+navigation controller; the total cost surges well over that of Kinect.

I havent tried either of them so i cant comment on their worth.

@^^

Sorry I should have mentioned that it is my speculation. Although it does raise suspicions, that within months of its launch it is out of stock almost the World over. And Sony is pushing hard for people to buy individual accessories, thereby making more money on the same items.

Unless you really want to jump around and wave your arms in the air, no one in their right mind would use these motion controllers to play games when they are alone. These accessories are geared towards party and family games where more than one persons can enjoy some good gaming time together.

Some of my friends who bought the Kinect are mighty pleased with it, but most of them have not yet experienced the Move.

I just googled for this and couldnt find a source. Is it true? why they discontinue within one month?
Yes, it is true. When I inquired about the Starter pack at various electronic stores like Chroma, Planet M etc. They told me it was discontinued. All the stores now have 320 Gb PS3 with 2 free games. Even Intencity said that they don't expect any more Starter packs. It is out of stock everywhere.

The move started pack has been discontinued. Lucikly i got one for myself that too for 22.3k.
Tried out the move coontroller and till now i am pretty satisfied with it. no complaints. anywayz had to pay only 1k more over and above the PS3 320Gb + 2 free games bundle to get the move bundle.
