Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update has been released as promised earlier and now available for download from the Windows Store for free for Windows 8 users. For Indian users, the update will be available from Friday, 18th October.



The Windows 8.1 brings many improvements over Windows 8 including Start Button, refreshed UI, improvements in search, sharing, option to boot directly to desktop to name a few.

If you’re a consumer and already have a Windows 8 device, you can now download the free update to Windows 8.1 online through the Windows Store.

If you’re a consumer who has a device running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP or the Windows 8.1 Preview, visit Windows.com, which will detect your operating system and provide you with the information you need to get Windows 8.1 on your device.

Those who installed Windows 8.1 Preview already from Windows 8 can get the update to full Windows 8.1 from the Store. Those who performed clean install of Windows 8.1 Preview will need to reinstall Windows 8 first and then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

The retail version of Windows 8.1 will be available for $119.99 and Windows 8.1 Pro for $199.99.

No, i meant do i have to download the .iso and install or will it show up in the store as an update just like everybody else?

I got my Win8 key from Dreamspark not 8.1.
 
I am already downloading Win8.1 through windows update from my Dreamspark Win8 key . So no issue in upgrading from Win8 DS keys
 
Opened the store but no prompt for 8.1 update
No 8.1 update in windows update either. Only simple updates
I used kmsnano to run it for 6 months and wasnt able to use it later so used an activator.
I am using this from about 8 months without any issues
Any help?

You won't be able to upgrade to windows 8.1 if your windows 8 is not activated with a legit key and also there is no method till yet to activate 8.1 with some ahem methods.

And those who have updated to it, does it take any extra space from C Drive or replaces win 8 files?
I have about 2.2 GB free in C Drive
 
I cant access certain exe files. Windows gives an error that the file doesn't exist, if i make a copy of that file i am able to access the program. Anyone else facing this issue?
 
I've had a lot of problems since updating, steelseries pulled its latest driver update.. Even without that, the mouse goes haywire in games. My windows installation already had to be repaired once...
 
AFAIK - 8.1 has a new KMS version, so you cant use your old versions - so if you are using ahem versions of Office or Windows - stick to the old ones. Better yet - go back to lovely Windows 7 ;)
