Forum Feedback Migrating away from XenForo

And why do you think escrow has not caught on till now anywhere when it comes to selling used stuff ?
The world has eBay. People buy / sale based on reputation. It still works.

To add to that also think about why Ebay failed and incurred huge losses in India?
Ebay india was bought off by Flipkart/Walmart to shut it down. Flipkart back then ran by idiotic people. Remember the time they closed the website and went app only?

I think I sold 5 pc parts & bought 5 pc parts in ebay india before it was shutdown in 2018, August.

Please take a look at Flarum as a Discourse/Xenforo alternative. It is a newer project, but the software is stable and the development speed is rapid. I've briefly used it to run a small community in 2022 and even back then it was rock solid.

Flarum has a robust plugin/extension system with some key feature plugins offered by the core dev team and others offered by the community. This allows your deployed instance to be as bare bones or full featured as you like it to be. Similarly it has a theming ecosystem as well.

I would be happy to help with customization/theming if you guys would like to run a test site.

Flarum is not actively developed and is lacking compared to Discourse.

Just wanted to drop in a disclaimer that when we migrate, all the duplicate account might get left behind (not migrated). So if you have a duplicate account and want it to merged, drop in a PM to me.

Will setup a test site for everyone to play around with a good couple of months before the migration, so that we can iron out all the feedback. Can also post a short series of how to videos for you all to look through and understand what can be done where.

Everywhere I go, its littered with tiny life improvements.

Everyone can setup their own navigation and select the links to the categories that they find most useful.

What does this look like on a phone?

It looks beautiful and intuitive. Will try to setup a test site by this weekend for everyone to play around with and get used to. Will have posts on it from 2005 to 2008 so it will be fun to dig around.

just requesting to think for a user and usability perspective. discourse is at the bottom of usability.
example :- https://discourse.pi-hole.net/
also check DM .
Your suggestions are welcome and I understand where you are coming from.

Everyone has their own preferences and liking. As for usability, Discourse is far better in terms of usability and features. Agreed it may take some getting used to for some people. I have said it earlier in this thread, if this transition kills the forum, then so be it.

Standing still is not an option, need to evolve. The most important benefit of discourse is that it is API first and that makes creating a mobile app relatively easy for it. I had earlier started Project Xello and announced it with a working prototype, but it was too much work. Discourse give us a kick start and eliminates 80% of the work.

Yep thats why we will take every feedback and implement it to make the transition and journey ahead as seamless as possible. But not moving ahead is not an option.

Especially of such a lovely corner of the internet.
not only lovely.
i guess we are one of the rare few which survived this long (few us us might remember erodov) and we still discuss data based tech to help fellow members.
And we are very very unique, with no hidden objective like LTT's forums.

I'm genuinely excited about the transition to Discourse. We've been using XenForo for a long time and are very familiar with both its strengths and its limitations. Now it's time to see what Discourse brings to the table. Testing it out on demo sites just doesn’t provide the full picture. A real, day to day experience is what’s needed to properly evaluate it.

I’ve been active across many forum communities over the years. MyBB, SMF, Drupal, Salesforce, phpBB, vBulletin, XenForo, and more. This is the first site I’m part of that’s making the switch to Discourse, and I’m looking forward to exploring what the latest forum tech has to offer. It’ll be a great opportunity for me to get a feel for how it stacks up against the others, especially if I ever need to launch my own private community in the future.

I have no problems with current setup. Let's launch the new version to a sub domain and make available to us, as beta.techenclave.com let us test too

Discourse is significantly different but it brings about so many useful features that I'm sure existing members would appreciate it once they get used to it — like sub-discussions within a thread and not worrying about if it's OT or not. It'd be silly for TE to be stuck on something this archaic, being a tech forum.

I'm particularly looking forward for a feature where we can browse through all the images posted in a thread, like what OCUK used to have before. Not sure if Discourse has that.

I got an Discourse summary email - I guess this wasn't intended.

I will continue to experiment with the test install. Feel free to login and do anything you like since its a test install. Guess we can migrate in the first week of July as planned. Tick tock..

Note: All posts made there on the test install would be lost when we migrate.

Will all existing customizable topics work same way on new software ? like buy-sell
Yes.. its not setup yet but they will.

I am unable to login with existing credentials. Is there something I am missing?

Nevermind. Logged in via email. Looks lovely!

However the experience on the tablet leaves a lot to be desired. Waiting for the other guys to chime in.

Also threads with the same titles are a problem here too? Never really encountered that though.
