^ Hmm that's damn decent since I'm still clocking 49 Idle with U-120, CPU at 3,2 1.35v.

What about warranty ? Is it totally gone ?

heh me running 62-63 load tat temps with u120, 2.8ghz @ 1.285vcore. orthos temps around 54-55. u120 is lapped but the chip ihs isnt.

never though I'd ever lap my HS but you are inspiring me to.....
After enabling CnQ on my desktop, the idle temps (on a a AMD winchester) are hovering close to 55C and I suppose that ain't anything good

the amd winchester generally is very hot. plus i dont think the amd ihs are bad they are usually flat

@Czar... on AMD u are better off removing the heatspreader altogether. No use lapping... its pretty flat in the first place.

Used 3M sand paper.
320-400-600-800-1000-1200-2000 grit dry + wet.
No polishing done.
are these some special sand paper?
where can I find them, the regular paint shop/hardware store or some other industry like car paint people.
basically u mean it should be the finest sandpaper.
What does these no. means 320-2000?

3M is the name of company which makes sand paper.

The nos are the grit nos. meaning how rough / fine the sandpapers are.

320 grit is very rough and takes out lot of material. on the other hand 2000 grit is very fine and used as a last step.

You have to follow the order, i.e. start from lower grit no and move to higher.

Any particular reason why they dont come factory lapped...

Surely Intel shud kn that it helps...Whats the catch?

Even I wonder that , cant intel do it?

If they cant they can out source this to India we will do it fine.

Thanks Funky, ur explanation helps me, I needed that as I am sure mine needs lapping for sure, running 54c ideal right now with stock fan

guys, pardon me for my ignorance.....

all i did when I set up this machine was applied a thin layer of AS5 and fixed the HS on top of that.....when you say heatspreader, I presume you meant the thermal paste...or am i missing out on something here?

Also, since i don't OC, are these temps (50-55 idling on the Winnie 3200) ok?

this machine runs 24X7 pretty much

^^I'm referring to the silver colored thing on top of the CPU on which the CPU specs are printed. It can easily be removed on an AMD.

honestly its almost impossible to kill the processor under notmal overclocking and testing conditions.
And with current price drop the resale value of this processor by the time i decide to replace it will be peanuts.
So no risk.
Hmm.. that's a very valid point.

*Runs away to his store-room to get out the sand paper*

Ah..thanks....

just one more qstn....I really don't want to take the pain of opening up the damn box and doing all of this unless the temps are on the redline....
Is a 45-55 C idling temp okay on the Winchester 3200?

3M paper are soo damn exp :P

i used those cheap sand papers till 1200 then used 3M above 1500 (dry + wet frm here)
n i have a mirror finish just like u, i didnt had a goodcam when i was lapping only had a K750 so the pics i shot arent of good quality

maybe when i get the WC installed i will post a few pics of my lap work ;)
