Department of Telecommunications(DoT) announced the introduction of 'number portability' in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

Under this system, subscribers do not have to change their mobile phone number if they shift from one operator to another.

Number portability in big cities by Q4 2008

I feel this is great news as now I will not have to think twice before ditching my GSM Operator if there are good schemes available with other operators :hap2:

Wats your take ?

I guess the service operators have to be given a chance to pull up their socks. I particularly welcome the move. I've been sticking to my crappy Vodafone(Orange/Hutch) connection for the past 6 years primarily because of the number. I'm ready to jump onto a Reliance network as soon as this happens. You just cant beat their network in Mumbai.

Well it wont be cheaper

ull have to pay much for this service as lot of back end stuffs need to be maintained check here

The customer would have to incur a higher fee for switching over to another operator while retaining a mobile number. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will decide the methodology of arriving at a tariff for portability. Mobile operators would have to upgrade their networks to enable portability.

That was expected. But I would still welcome the move as its gonna keep the Operators on their toes and they will have to try to keep their customers happy lest they switch to some other network.

3G is expected to be launced in India in 2/3 months time.It feels like India has, finally, woken up and I, certainly, am excited.

Great move! I've been waiting for this since the idea was first conceived a couple of years ago.. Hope my bl00dy Spice does something and improves rates/network else its definitely bye-bye Spice!

But why not Bangalore in the list!! :(

Brilliant. I can finally get a reliance number with a normal other connection !
..and that unfortunately is why i believe this feature was even introduced.

Reliance greased some palms to the chagrin of the other GSM operators.

It's sad to realise that this is the *only* way that changes happen is so that existing Reliance subscribers on CDMA won't need to change their numbers to shift to the new GSM network. Because no one wants to do it, Reliance would have lost a lot of business otherwise.

Urr, no, wait. Reliance is CDMA na?
Not for long they are shifting to GSM as they are tired of paying royalties to Qualcomm.
