For a person like me who is gonna upgrade in july end/september, what would be a better choice.

1. A mobo with P35 chipset (45nm support) + no SLI

2. OR a MOBO with Nvidia 680i chipset i.e. SLI but no 45nm support

Although i want a mobo with 45nm support as well as SLI :) but GOK when that will be released.

Also how much time before DDR3 will become an actual standard...just like ddr2 is nowdays.

Thanks a lot

Please let me know soon.

You can go with 680i based ones. I think P5n32-e is pretty well known here. And there are very good chances that you will get 45nm support for these mobos.

mainly get the best 680i based board available when you buy.

If you want to go with DDR3, I think for now it has to be a P35 board and you will loose SLI feature. And DDR3 are quite expensive right now. Maybe you should wait for a bit longer for that to be mainstream (maybe between Q4 2007 - Q2 2008).

Any idea by when will we get 45nm support on 680i mobo's. I mean wont we have to wait for a new nvidia chipset to get 45nm support. Or is it possible that the existing 680i chipset can be made to support 45nm ????

Actually all board manufacturers are silent on 45nm support with older mobos.

In terms of pure compatibility, some data shows that most of the latest 975, 965 and 680i chipset motherboards can support 45nm procys. But the big question is will the manufacturers support them by releasing BIOS updates?

My guess is, most of the high end ones will be provided with 45nm support BIOS. The rest will either be unsupported or will not be compatible because of other reasons which are beyond a simple BIOS update.

Ex: Intel BADAX2 needs some hardware changes to support 45nm procys. In this case there is no question of supporting these with older boards.

Nvidia 680i:

There was some talk that a senior Nvidia guy stated that 680i based boards will be compatible with the next gen procys and they would support it by releasing the needed BIOS update. I will post the link if I have time searching for it.

Only thing I can tell you now is - If 45nm support is a must, go for a P35 based mobo

If you need SLI badly - go with 680 based one and most probably you can get 45nm support once those are released. But make sure that you buy a high end, most widely used board.

Its not possible for Current 965 and 975 Boards to support Penryn, without a Mod, due to different VRM required for 45nm Chips.

Remember Intel 975XBX Rev303 and Rev304?

680i, There is still a debate, But I dont think itll support it.

Also, September, then youd rather wait for X38 Chipsets!

penryn's specs are same as its older siblings when it comes to VRM. You can check that out.

Arguing for the sake of a stand is of no use, we will know in few months time.

Manufacturers are tight lipped about it for only one reason and its not in anyway related to technical aspects.

He will be in the same boat with X38 as in P35, he needs 45nm support and SLI. So either he has to buy 680i or wait for the next gen chipsets from Nvidia.

If i were the OP, I wouldnt wait for such long to run SLI on hacked drivers. I would rather wait for Ns new chipset or go with 680i

But anyways, I might upgrade to X38 based one :) as SLI/Crossfire support are non issues for me.
