Ok, so my bro got his hands on a modded PSP. Now the thing is, its running firmware version 3.9, and is not able to run some games that we tried to run.

My gites is that it needs to be upgraded to a newer firmware version, correct?

1. So which is the latest stable modded firmware version?

2. Where do I get it?

3. Can I do a direct upgrade from the existing one or is there a different process I need to follow?

Since the FW is currently on 3.9 ... I'm guessing its a old and fully hackable PSP 1000 or PSP2000. Yes you ought to upgrade the CFW. 5.50 GEN-D3 should be more that sufficient for everything coming out nowadays, plus its highly stable compared to these newer exploits for 6.xx+.

1. If permanent CFW is what you want then go for 5.50 GEN-D3. Little difficult to install but the PSP will permanently remain in CFW untill you uninstall it.
If temporary CFW, then go for 5.03 GEN-C, it gets deactivated the moment you switch off the PSP but very easy to install and run. Think of it as on-demand CFW.
2. The internet .... No but seriously - PSP Hacks, PSP Go Hacks, PSP Custom Firmware, PSP Emulators, PSP HEN has a lot of information and content.
3. Not too sure about this. But if its temporary CFW 5.03 GEN-C then I think you can directly download the 5.03 official firmware and 5.03 signed exploit via your PC, install the firmware on your PSP, run the exploit, then the CFW (GEN-C) and you should be good to go. If you want permanent 5.50 GEN-D3 then I think you will have to flash the 5.50 GEN-D3 files via Hellcat's Recovery Flasher homebrew on your PSP ....

Thanks for the info. Will look at both options. I believe the temporary exploit one will be less risky, correct? Also, how long does it take to re-enable the hack each time? Since I have a couple of spare batteries for long commutes and changing those will disable the exploit each time.

Well theres not a lot of scope for disaster by Hellcat either but yes the temporary one is a bit safer as the fragile flash0 files are practically untouched. Also, afaik your PSP can even be recovered if you screw up while flashing it unlike the newer semi-hackable ones.

Renabling the hack used to be a pita with chickhen R2 but now with the signed 5.03 exploit, it happens in seconds. Plus this signed exploit jumps you directly into a CFW (earlier you had to enable HEN mode via chickhen R2 and then select and load up a CFW from the XMB).
