Modding ASUS Star Ice Cooler for seperate 120mm Fan - Is it Possible

Guys the topic says it all.

I wanted to know if we could remove the jet setup from the cooler &
what if we connect out own 120mm fan wud it provide silent and better cooling.

We can tie the fan on the cooler with help of metal wires or anything else.

Will it help.

Guys do let me know if its possible or a useless thought.

Have a look at the ASUS Star Ice Without the Jet - All Copper

Its possible if ur willing to take out tht stock off it ,nd not cry if u screw it ;)

Sunny mite help if u ask him or if he reads this.......he sure does sme :S stuff

Yeah ...but u planning to do tht........
u cud use 2 fans on the side if u want.....like sme othr coolers on sites :)

nd tell us wht results u get ...Bfore nd After
so tht others may follow :)

It depends on the voltage........ If you get a dud CPU, then you will have to feed in high voltages to push it to 2.7GHz.

And I doubt it will keep a Venice at 1.55 + Volts below 45 deg C even at full speed in the Summer.

And I don't think it is worth taking it apart. Just buy an XP-120 and fit a Delta 220 CFM fan on it!!!!

I know....... I know...... XP-120 is not available in India but Asus Star Ice is.......
But I would not recommend taking it apart.

But if you do, it will cost you only 2K and you could probably get it repaired for a fee as Asus has a big presence in India.

LOl.....Hmm.
Quady ..u must b knwing Funky did 2.5 at 1.3v smethng or even lesser......(praying u get a awesme OC'er venice:) )

Btw a XP90 wud b better than 120 ......Fans dnt knw much.....u shud hav seen Masky's thread on tht....

nd cant figure out wht temps nd stuff u will get unless sme1 has tried first or if u do 1st......
so it will all depend............but worth a try;)

But will it keep the OCed 2.7Ghz Venice 3200+ to below 45 Degree with its slow speed.
Do you think the local 120 MM fan will do the same ? Even TT 120mm High CFC fans will be noisy. And I doubt if Asus will use fans of inferior quality.

Guys i am looking for 15th or 17th week venice 3200+ which doesnt require more
volts to OC better so that i can keep it cool even when OCed to 2.7Ghz

But still wanted to ask will this mod work.

Nikhil - i wanted a XP90 + TT SB Led 92mm , but who will get it for me.
So looking for all possible desi solutions.

considering the size of the heatsink is the same as that of the stock fan, you will need to use an adaptor to fully utilize the extra flowrate of a 120mm. making one yourself should be easy enough.

Would mounting 2 low rpm fans on either end of the cube (same dir of air flow) reduce the noise produced per unit cfm?

i knew how easy it will be to remove the jet the day i bought starice.
But the problem is how will you attach the 120MM fan on it? The sides are too small for 120MM. And how to attach the fan.

Yes...possible...

But the negatives of having a 120mm fan is toooo much....why?? here's my true opinion :

1. 120mm means maximum airflow at the edges, i.e., around the 110mm edge....the fins are hardly 90mm wide...so most of the air goues waste....

2. 120mm fans have a bigger core, i.e., the motor in the centre. this creates a bigger "blind spot" (no air passes infront of the motor, so that area isnt cooled by the fan) thats a HUUUGE disadvantage....

heh..there is a technique however ;) using a 120mm to 92mm or 80mm duct....

using a duct enables u to use a bigger fan instead of a smaller one...and it eliminate the blind spot. But this will be verrrry bulky, and practically imposible since u'll ber placing the fan verticlly, and there will be no room to make it since it'll interfere with the RAM slots, VGA cards, etc tec.....

Hey Quad,

I just thought of an idea........ Funky has an XP-90 which he is using now. His water cooling kit is on the way(or has already arrived....I am not sure). Why don't you ask him if he can sell it to you????

@ Funky ---- How is this idea????

@ Nikhil
If u want to knw why or why he isnt selling PM him:)

@ Quad
u can do the same :)

But better is his water cooling kit offer .....sme1 buying a PC now , thts a steal deal :yahoo:

Quad, just hold on tight, i know there will be atleast 2 xp90 for sale soon, one from Funky and one from an Undisclosed member :P oh yea, its not me..
