My piece of advice
For your budget, you have the choice of two widescreen monitors. Either Viewsonic 1912wb-3 ( which i bought a week back ) or Samsung 940 bw (which my room mate bought 3 days back)
Viewsonic -
Pros - Out of box, the Colors are sharp. It has two speakers (which anyone seldom uses) because of which the monitor looks a bit bigger than samsung. No hazzles with installation. Not as bulky as Samsung ( Samsung is bulky mainy coz of the stand). Nice colors and has an impressive response rate of 5ms (which is very useful for games). Its also priced lower than Samsung 940 bw (atleast in bangalore)
Cons - Out of box, You many need to adjust the colors and overlay . Does not have vertical height adjustment like Samsung 940( which did not bother me much but it may be a disadvantage in some cases), The buttons are chrome plated and look a bit cheap (my perspective ) . It doesn't have preset of monitor profiles like samsung ( i think changing from text to vivid was quite useful in samsung when u want to switch to programming in some language and back to videos) of course u can do it in more cumbersome way of adjusting the contrast and brightness but i thought the presets were useful.
Samsung -
Pros - Out of box the screen is bright and no need to adjust the colors as much as viewsonic. Has a vertical height adjustment stand which is useful. the buttons are plastic and looks nicer ( once again, my perspective

). Comes with monitor presets and has an impress response rate of 4ms (useful in games).
Cons - Bulkier because of the height adjustment stand. a bit (but negligibly) costlier than viewsonic. The monitor looks smaller than viewsonic (mainly coz the missing speakers at the bottom edge ) but the screen looks wider coz of same. I also found a fllash of bright light at the top centre edge and bottom centre edge( when both the monitors are in approx same brightness) when the desktop is completely black. It may be coz of the fault in video brightness. Also, out of box, the fonts in viewsonic looks more distinct in viewsonic than on samsung. It tried to adjust the brightness contrast and sharpness in samsung but could never gain the clear fonts of viewsonic ( both the systems had clear type fonts set)
I think any of these monitors is a good buy for cheap 19 inch monitors. Widescreen monitors are very good to look at

, watch movies and play games (you need an equally good graphics card though ) Talking about movies, you may need to tweak all the movies to 16:10 ratio and certainly HD contents are better for 19 inches as their resolution is close to the 19 inch resolution
