Friends,
I want to purchase a large capacity internal SATA HDD for dumping my Movie/Music Collection. The same HDD will be used for OS as well.
My first requirement is reliability. Speed is secondary but first and foremost I want a reliable VFM HDD. Capacity I'm interested is 500Gb and upwards upto 1tb.
Pls Suggest. Thanks in Advance

If its just for dumping, get the green drive. I have the 750Gb model of the same and its good enough for dumping and downloading usage. I feel no difference compared to seagate 7200.11 when using for movies/music.

It runs cool, takes up lesser energy, so its much better.
PS : If you can work with 750 GB, I am going to sell off my 750 gb drive for 3.7k. But I can do that only when my internship ends, in about a week :)

Dude its simple , since speed isnt a concern for you and most major companies have similar failure drives , buy the drive which has the lowest per GB price

Since you'll be using the same HDD for OD also, you need to have some speed also. The WD Caviar Blue 640GB/1TB, gives the balance of both, speed and reliability. My vote to blue. size is your choice - as per your budget and space requirements.

WD green seems to be preferred brand here, but as mhamirma said, since it will be my os drive as well, Blue is also a good option. In terms of reliabilty how do compare green vs Blue??

This is how I got my 750 GB green : as a RMA replacement for a 640gb aaks Blue!

Initially i was not at all happy with it, as benchmarks show that this is indeed slower as compared to 7200.11 and caviar blue. But after using it in real time i don't think it makes that much a difference. + I had got 110 GB of more space.

That is why i recommended the drive as it is good for dumping purposes.

After two of my WD's failed, i decided to give seagate (7200.2 1TB) a try. I was surprised that none of the dealers in my area kept seagate, all pushed me to go for WD. So, ended up buying one more WD10EADS for 4450/-.

Did not wanted a trip all the way to lamington road for just a HDD. Went to Vashi for some work and purchased one WD green 500gb for 2725.
