Hey all, yesterday I was trying to install my Asus A8NE motherboard after very long time. It was in idle state packed in a box all these days. When trying to boot the PC, some sparks flew from the CPU area and I could smell something burnt on the mobo. I removed the heat-sink near the CPU and saw the area darkened. Now, I am not sure what thing went wrong. The board is not booting anymore and there are no beeps. I can see the green LED on. Is my mobo dead? Please give some tips how I can get it repaired. It was bought second hand from T_D Bazaar forum in 2006. I have attached the pic showing the area where the component is burnt.

Thanks in advance.

The heatsink is covering the VRMs. Try to get it repaired from ASUS service centre, am sure the costs should be within 300~500 bucks.

Thanks mate, I removed the heatsink and found loads of moist dust surrounding that area. The burnt thing is very tiny and soldered. Now, that small part burnt and broken. It is almost as small as a grain of sugar :S.

PSU I used was Antec TP 2 550 Watts. I am sure that was not the cause of issue :).

What could have led to this disaster? The psu?

This is the small part I am talking about. See the red pointer arrow. This image is not of my motherboard. I got it online but the same component is burnt on my mobo. Is it possible to replace that thing? Please advice :)

Yes and no, mate. Unless you have a soldering iron with a micro tip and you are an expert on soldering, would advice to give it to a repair guy. Its not worth doing it yourself, at all.

OK, thanks for the help. 1 last question, this mobo has no warranty left now. What should i tell the service centre person about the mobo fault? Should I directly tell them about the damaged component? Will they reject to repair it if I tell him about the component fail? because it would mean I have removed the heatsink which is not advisable :ashamed:. Thanks.

If you are sure as to the component which has failed, tell them, and ask for the rates. If they can repair it, they will tell ya. In this case, yes. And if no warranty, they will not bother to ask usually as to why you removed the HS.
