Need a dependable mouse for Photo editing and fine work, and occasional gaming. Is the Logitech MX518 okay? What alternatives do I have for about the same price?

Also, what is the benefit of those expensive mouse pads? I find those 50 Rs gel mouse pads just fine - would I need to get a nicer mouse pad to reap the benefits of mice like MX 518?

There are no alternatives at the same price. With given money of upto 2000 bucks I still cannot think of any other better mouse. A good mouse pad really brings out the best from MX518, but not really needed if you don't play lot of online FPS games which need high precision aiming and stuff like that,:P.

Gigabyte GM 6800 is a cheaper alternative @ 650/-. i have used it elder brother GM 6880, which was good for the price. Both are 1600 dpi the former being optical and latter a laser.

And MX 518 is really good for the price, if you intend on gaming too.

^^ Get the Razer Salmosa ~ 900/- + Rantopad H1 mouse-mat ~ 300/- TheITWares - One Stop for all Gizmos!RANTOPAD H1 Silk Centaur Gaming Mouse Pad - TheITWares, its a dependable solution as well as the mouse mat will ensure maximum performance output from your mouse.

Be warned though that the Razer has a standard 3-button layout, compared to the Logitech MX 518 / G-400 AND the Gigabyte GM 6800.

It is the texture of the mat that matters most to a mouse sensor [optical OR laser], a decent mat offers this foremost [good surface] the better the finish of the mat, the better the sensor tracks on the surface. A cheap mat overtime degrades -- threads fray, surface becomes scarred and the perforance takes a nose dive, the mouse seems to behave like a slug, movement is jerky / in-accurate tracking and so on.

Also the mouse feet have a easier and longer life-time.

The Rantopad series of mats is dependable as well as easy on the pocket, here are some articles on the same -- [M] 21-Way Mousepad Roundup.

You may consider Logitech G400 too at 1.4K. But MX518 FTW

I hope you know that the G-400 is replacing the MX-518 -- http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/09/logitech-launches-g400-mouse/

Guys does anyone know where I can pick up the Gigabyte GM 6800 in Bangalore? Checked out a couple of stores last week and none of them had it.

I ended up ordering the mouse through Flipkart. I have been using it for a week now and I love it! I just need a bigger mousepad! Any suggestions?

Any cheap mouse with side buttons(Budget 500rs) available here? I'm still using Logitech MX310(has two side buttons and one more center button its quite useful).. or suggest one from abroad I can source it from Singapore/US

my razer deathadder had double click issue which i gave for replacement yesterday. So i bought a MX518 yesterday for 1300bugs. Its a very good mouse. Had nice texture and the shape is also well suited for palm grip. Lot of buttons.

But somehow i liked the deathadder more than this. Which had a very nice soft click than the mx518. Even the side buttons are more easy to use in deathadder while holding the mouse itself but in mx518 one has to move the thumb little up to press the side buttons. I even liked the scroll button of deathadder more than mx518.

Keeping above things aside the mx518 is very reliable in use and according to the reviews and feedback it doesn't get faulty soon, which is not the case with the razer deathadder( double click issue).

Closest contender you have Sire, is the Gigabyte GM-6800, it retails for around 700/- @ TheITWares -- TheITWares - One Stop for all Gizmos! Please do not call me Sir :ashamed: but thank you for the recommendation! This mouse has only extra buttons only on the left side. Been wanting a mouse with buttons on both sides. Plz let me know if you have any other recommendations!!!

I picked up two Gigabyte GM6800 for 600 each from a local shop last week. Its a great vfm option and i love it close to my old MX 518. No time to game but cant live without the foreward/back buttons, hence went for the GM6800. Its actually same as GM6880, only difference being the sensor being optical for 6800(600/-) vs laser for 6880(850/-) and the tracking capabilities of both on a good mat is almost same, though 6880 is bit heavier.
