Movie downloading can be tracked?

with dynamic ip addresses it will be a pain for him to actually prove that the person downloaded his movie. but knowing how Indian law is the onus will be on the person who has been found "guilty" to prove that he did not download the movie in the first place. Indian laws are unfortunately really badly made and to make things worse those laws are not executed properly too. Police and judiciary all have their own interpretation of law.

But at first place say bwtorrent...whose server wont be in India would give Ip address to the director?I dont think so

I guess its more related to rapidshare stuff

Correct me ..if i m wrong

The only way he or for that matter anyone can get access to IP's is by they themselves downloading it from that particular tracker.Even you can see it.Use utorrent and download any torrent from any site.Take a close look at the peers tab.You will be able to see all the ips which you are currently connected to.Filter them by countries.Indian ISP's have a certain range of IP's allocated to them. All you need to do is record the time when that particular ip was being used. Then crosscheck it with the ips which the ISP's allocated.ISP's usually log such info. They have to.

And I think its just a publicity stunt.

Yup, RS/etc & public trackers.

Does rapidshare give out details as to who all have leeched the supposedly illegal content uploaded to their servers?

all he has to do is to look at the Indian peers while downloading the torrent himself. but how long will he do that is a mystery. and whether that is what he plans to do is a mystery.

The news column is so vague on details that its hard to figure out what his software does and in what way or through what means the software will take ip's.

just forget it - our newspaper journalists are a bunch of fools who know only how to type on their keyboards. they won't know anything more about computer stuff than a 10 year old. must be a paid ad by the producer to deter pirates.

The article says...

The downloader's IP address, date and time is automatically recorded, and stored in a database. The production house can then use these details to register a complaint with the cyber cell.

Now there are numerous websites from where movies can be downloaded. How is this 'so called' software going to track them.

Probably this is publicity stunt to just generate fear in minds of people who intend to download the movie.

And how does one do that ? -- prove a negative.

Hint --- almost impossible if not exceedingly difficult. So anytime someone asks you to do that be aware that it is a BS thing to ask.

However there are certain categories where it works like that excluding non-bailable offences, you're out on bail. Wasn't there this case that some businessman's kid ran over 6 ppl in mumbai, when did he get banged up ? only after the court ruled against him many months later.

Movie downloads is not exactly in the same league as these ;)

As to whether OP's story is true or not, look at history, has something like this ever happened as yet ?

Does not mean it cannot happen but i'm not sure we've reached a critical mass yet, 300 million middle class but only 5 million online. Japan with 1/10th the population has 10 times more IP addresses allocated than we do.

These movies that one supposedly can download are also avaliable on the street. No need for internet.

Looks like a marketing gimmick to me, if he was so smart he would done something good for himself 20 yrs back rather than lugging around sanjay dutt all his life.

and ones it goes on DVD's, wonder what will he do then, run around all the shops in india and close everything down? i didn't think so!

i dont understand how you can track rs downloads.rs downloads can be tracked if and only if rs gives out the ip addresses.btwn rs will not give out ip addresses if asked.what they will do is take the content down on their servers.
another question.do they really give a sh## about india or any other countries asking them the ip addresses of the downloaders.I dont think so.
so the downloaders are safe.if pressure is put it is the content which is taken down which means that rs has complied with the rules.
so rs downloads are pretty safe.
correct me if i am wrong.

cheers.

Who's watching this shit anyway?

He can track all the ip addresses he wants, but how many sites and sources will he cover?

Secondly, the cost of legal action on such a scale would be much more than the budget of this stupid film..

This is just a stupid stunt trying to make people download the film as its gonna be shitty enough to be ignored by downloaders too..haha..

There are a lot of websites and each one offers a lot of copies. How can he track all? Even if he is able to, can he file case on all those people? If there was a software like this, game companies would have done this 10 years ago itself. This guy may be a total computer noob, but he thinks all the people are more noob than him and are kids to believe and get frightened by that sh1t.
