It is no secret that Mozilla is also working on their own smartphone OS. Dubbed the Firefox OS, Mozilla plans to unveil devices running on this OS for commercial release later this year, 2013. Mozilla has released their developer phones running on their HTML5 driven Firefox OS.
Firefox OS

Mozilla has unveiled their developer phone, but it seems that it isn't the only one. There will be two developer devices, one of which is this:

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
  • Screen 3.5″ HVGA Multitouch
  • 3 MP Camera
  • 4GB ROM, 512 MB RAM
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Light and proxmity Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB
  • 1580 mAh battery
  • Over the air updates
  • Unlocked, add your own SIM card

As you can see, the device is nothing fancy. A 3.5" HVGA display, Snapdragon S1 processor running on ancient ARM A5 architecture and 512 MB of RAM. If the specs are anything to go by, Firefox OS will be not only an incredibly light OS but also be typically aiming for low end smartphones segment only.

There is word of a higher end developer phone code named "Peak" which might carry modern specifications (compared to the other device at least) such as a 4.3" qHD display and dual core processor as well as 1 GB of RAM.
