Hi all,
This is my 2nd attempt at creating a guide so hope u guys like it. IMO TB is one of Mz unclaimed diamonds. Depending on the feedback I hope to bring a series of guides/articles on TB (Thunderbird) I hope to share how we can make TB do our bidding.
The first thing after installing an e-mail client is to create a profile. A profile in a nutshell provides the configuation settings for a user/s &/or groups. I haven't played with outlook or outlook express hence wouldn't be able to compare with them but would be able to tell what's in all Mozilla profiles. I said Mozilla as the characteristics of Mozilla profile are shared by FF (Firefox), TB (Thunderbird), Mz (Seamonkey, formerly Mozilla suite) & Camino (Mac OS X browser). The Mozilla profiles include all user settings, mails, bookmarks, passwords, extensions everything. The beauty of the profile in TB is that it's a folder hence one can burn the profile folder & any of the Mozilla binaries & be up in running in less than 5 minutes. One doesn't have to figure out which version the profile has to be compatible. If the profile has some more info. than the binary can support that info. is just not used.
All hands to the battlefront! We're actually going to make a profile. After installing TB & clicking on the TB icon one comes up with this window :-
This shows the default profile. Now we're going to delete the default profile & make a new one. This is how it'll look after clicking on delete profile. :-
Now we start making the profile. The next 2 images show how the profile is being created.
The last image is interesting as it gives us quite a bit of info. which needs to be written down somewhere in case we wanna move profiles. In the above e.g. I had taken a fictitious profile by the name of klm. As can be seen in the above window I've highlighted both the profile name as well as where it'll be located. The interesting thing is that the name of the profile is in 2 parts with a decimal in-between unlike folders in win32. Also the end name of the folder is the same as the profile. This makes it easier to search in case if one doesn't remember where the profile has been kept.
Atlast the profile is complete as can be seen from the next pic. :-
If one wants then one can have more than one profile as can be seen here.
Now we move to the actual task of creating an account in TB. The following 6 images will walk us through the journey of making a TB a/c in a profile. After clicking on the profile we made or one of the profiles that we made we're presented with the window below which asks which type of a/c we want to make. As we want an e-mail a/c we click on the button. One can have more than one a/c in a profile but is generally not a good practice. :-
The second window asks us- the user to give our name & our e-mail address. As before have taken the refuge of two fictitious names :-
After filling in the details & clicking on Next we're presented with the 3rd window :-
This asks us the pop or imap details (for incoming mail/s) as well as smtp details for the outgoing (sending of mails). These details are to be had from u'r web mail provider or ISP as the case maybe. Most of the people use POP as IMAP is still an upcoming thing hence using POP in the e.g. One of the interesting things if u guys have noticed is that I've checked the checkbox on Global Inbox. The relevance of that would be revealed later.
The next window makes sure that the incoming & outgoing usernames are the same. For some people they like to use pseudonames or something in which case this is useful. Yellow page journalism comes to mind
The next window asks us to name the account. This can be anything like seen below :-
The last window in a/c creation gives us all the details on one page so one can re-check all the details filled as well as giving us option to download the messages instantly with the checkbox checked.
That's all about a/c creation. Note that I had checked on the checkbox for using Global Inbox on Local folders. Below are the pics. for with & without Global Inbox :-
As can be seen the difference between the two are the 1st is in local folders while the 2nd has its own a/c & everything while local folders is empty. The second scenario would be when there are more than 1 a/c in the same profile/user. The disadvantage is that troubleshooting becomes troublesome & if the traffic on either the a/c's is more than porting the profile
is difficult.
Well that's about it. Feel free to share/flame/enflame what u think about the article/guide
