Hello friends, I'm having a problem pertaining to buying a new MP3 player for use during travel, home use. (I'm a college student)

I'm not looking for audiophile grade set-ups, simplicity is priority (if it comes with an expansion option even better).

My needs are a compact player (as small as possible), good sound quality -- I'll use my SoundMAGIC PL 30's and later maybe a Brainwavz M 1 --, capacity as high as possible (4 GB is what I'm aiming for + expansion slot will be a boon). No need of a display for videos, but a song-ticker is needed. Please pour in your suggestion, with price and if it is a online purchase the URL as well.

These are the players I've seen, here in Bangalore S.P. Road --

[ Digital Pride COWON] 4GB ~ 3200/-

http://www.sony.co.in/view/View.action?page=HPHubSeriesDetail&site=hp_en_IN_i&productcategory=PA-WM-B-Series&id=349202 4GB ~ 3500/-

Welcome to the Transcend website - India - MP860 4GB ~ 3000/-

Welcome to the Transcend website - India - MP330 4GB ~ 1800/-

Budget ~ 3500/- stretchable to 4000/-.

Thanks in advance.

Re: MP3 Player dilema...

^^ Where in Bangalore, how to get its not available locally LINKS please. This was my first choice but not available anywhere @S.P. Road OR Tata CROMA.

Problem solved... reps please shelf this thread, thanks to all who helped.

Re: MP3 Player dilema...

Clip+ 4GB fits your needs perfectly and is available for only ~2.8k with bill and warranty ;).

Re: MP3 Player dilema...

Nice deal but AFAIK he doesn't provide any warranty or bill. You could ask the seller about it to be sure.Buying it from our in-house dealer Pristine Note , as suggested by Sukant would be much better. Comes with proper bill and warranty card and the service is remarkable from what I can see in the feedback thread.

Check here for the prices. 4GB Clip+ is for 2850.

You do realize that Nanite N2 is re-branded (original being Cube C30 player) and sold by MP4Nation and hence 'rave' reviews would be the norm? ;)

Nanite N2 compared to Clip+

Cons

- Supports no MP3 Tags, which means you cannot have playlists, won't be able to choose songs based on Artist / Genre / Album etc.,

- Does not support gap-less playback.

- Cannot be Rock-boxed

Pros

- Has better battery life. On shuffle for burn-in, it crosses 17 hrs easily. With regular use, expect about 12-14 hrs. But, if kept unused for a number of days, the battery loses charge. Charging time is usually 2 hours.

- Has higher output power. So, if you have any difficult to drive IEMs / Ear phones in the future, N2 is handy to have.

- Has BBE effects which are generally found in Cowon players

Same, same

- Supports microSD card. But it takes a terribly long time to 'Initialize' every time you boot it. Clip+ has a library and hence would load quickly. Without uSD card in the slot, N2 loads quickly and resumes playback of whatever song you last stopped.

- Plays music

Okay bumping this old thread, people you baled me out on the mp3 player issue, now need help for a pair of IEM's good sounding, no overpowered sound sets (bass should not drown the highs and similar on other aspects), now I listen to mostly alternative rock / metal (and a few sub-genres) / electronic (only mindthings) / classical (in form of soundtracks from Hans Zimmer, Michael Kamen, John Powell).

Now the budget is tagged at a max of around ~ 2500/- (the only exception is Brainwavz M2).

Thank you in advance.

Soundmagic PL-50 will suit you just fine as your and my music tastes are very similar and i found them to be very engaging for such genres of music. You might have to spend 200 bucks more, but they are easy to drive and suited for the kind of music you listen to.

@ALPHA17,

If your signature says "Dream Theater is back", then I'd look for something that can keep up with all that virtuoso stuff they do (and I still am not fond of LaBrie :P). It certainly needs speed, details, good treble, good mids, but yes! a controlled bass rather than humped/bumped bass.

I'd certainly say PL-50 is a good choice. As mentioned by rdst_1 in another thread, it sounds airy, has good treble, but just not enough bass quantity. You should not look for "warm and fun" IEMs like Brainwavz. They sound a little thick, making you miss the details. Actually speaking from experience, all that you look for would be found in really good IEMs (something starting from RE0 onwards), but for your budget, PL50 is a good choice from what I've heard. Brainwavz M1 is another choice for balanced phone, but PL50 edges it out on sound stage, crispness of sound, mid range etc.,

A little further up, ECCI PR401 has that combo of speed, spaciousness but with some more bass. But, it was too polite for my liking (not as "energetic")

@rdst_1

Isn't PL50 available for around 1900 (inclusive of taxes and shipping) from our Ex-TE dealer?

^^ Hmmm... wait I've a offer of a second hand Brainwavz M2 ~ 1700/- (source is currently classified). What say about that. I recently met Faheem Sir when I went to Bombay and had a chance to experience the Brainwavz M2 / M3, Ultimate Ears Triple Fi. 10 and they blew my PL-30's out of the water.

Yes! They will blow PL30. Check my signature for the relative rankings of the IEMs you mentioned. I think the same ;)

On M2: With PL50 @ 1900 vs M2 @ 1700, I'd personally choose M2. But, you said you did not like M2 much. So, why would it be suddenly dearer to your ears at a 1000 bucks less?

I did not say that I disliked the Brainwavz M2, it is just that people will not recommend it out-right for rock music lovers, even Faheem Sir said it is about okay even if I get a M1 (driving these will be a pain) but best will be if I can get a Brainwavz M3, but sadly that is out of budget.

I think I'll buy the M2's or shelf my up-gradation plans to a later date.

For me, it all comes down to "how I want the IEM to sound" rather than genre matching. It's just my preference and I have no way to evaluate yours. IMO, even M3 is not made for rock. It certainly is a better IEM compared to M2, but, it still sounds a bit thick and does not have enough speed.

The way I like my rock could be very different to yours, so I cannot say for sure. But I find analytical IEMs which sound a bit 'crisp' and fast to suit my tastes. It's the details, the smaller, micro things that I like with bands like Opeth, Tool, PT etc.,

M2 is more value for money considering the sound it provides, but M3 @ $90 is not value for money. Even with all the build quality issues they have, I'd choose RE0/ZERO, which still sound better than what their price indicates (actually Phonak PFE is better than both, albeit at a higher price). Even though it's brighter, something like a Sunrise XCited suits me fine with it's wider sound stage, crisp sound, detail, good bass (still bass light in terms of quantity, but still far better than RE0). IMHO, a used TF10 could be a better upgrade for you even though it might cost much more than a new M3.

If you ask me, you can buy M2 now rather than save for an upgrade. There are plenty of choices in the $80+ range and options would be mushrooming by the time you upgrade. The SQ / price factor has always been shrinking. Today, some of the very good sounding IEMs are available at $150 and the upgrades from thereon (even if you pay $400) are not huge. I can see a similar pattern around the $80 mark. RE0 was the first to mark that spot and today $60-90 is a very busy range. You can get a variety of sound signatures at reasonable prices. If you buy used from head-fi, you can get today's "great" $150 IEM at $100 and less. That I suppose is a better way to upgrade. My 2c :)

You could try the M2's with tips that don't give good seal to bring down the bloated bass they have.
