Hi folks,
Thanks to many of you'll I had set up my PC a while ago!

Was just going throught the MoBo manual, and was wondering what these two items were and if I should enable it or disable it.

1) Advanced Features > Quick Booting - Allows to boot within 5 second!

2) S.M.A.R.T Function ... should I enable or disable it?
Another thing (not related to bios I guess) is that when I first started using the PC, I was using an external serial modem (US Robotics)... and things were fine. I then got a PCI modem (Creative) and now have the problem of the internet getting disconnected constantly! Constantly mean, I connect, go to a site and before the page loads even 30%, it gets disconnected! It does not matter which site it is. ... Any ideas?

I am using XP Pro if that matters!

Thanks for any suggestions, tip offs or help!

Cheers!

1. Yes, Enable quick booting. It just does things like checking ram only once instead of the normal three times and thus improves the boot time.

2. Yes, turn on SMART. It stands for Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology and it enables HDD's to report about thier health and other status information which helps in finding potential hdd problems before hand. All HDD today are SMART enabled.

More info here.

Thanks Lord Nem ... Enabled them both :)

imoen ... the model no. is Creative D15655 ... not sure, but maybe they are ones that come with some IBM machines! .... I now put back the serial external modem and that works fine ... its just the creative one that is creating a problem.

Alot of these internal modems have trouble with Indian dial-up conditions. I have had 2 such modems from the states that refused to work here, no matter how i tried to tweak the S-Registers.

Then there are other modems called "softmodems". These are modems that lack any hardware processing of the modem's activity. ie. the computer does the job through software, instead of the modem. See here, 56K.COM: Beware Soft Modems

The only thing you can do is try to modify the S-Registers of your modem.
