Before letting you get any further. I must admit that their broadband speed and everything is very good. The problem starts when it stops working or you want to have a little change in plan.

I am a software programmer, need internet connection all the time. In my area (Dwarka, New Delhi) only MTNL was providing internet connection. I had a lot of trouble getting it and everything but that is what you expect from Sarkai machinery. Somehow how I managed to get it installed.

Recently Windows Vista Beta 2 was released. Being a programmer I wanted to grab it as fast as possible. I do not have a credit card so ordering it was out of question. I have a DSL-339 plan from MTNL which gives you 700 MB download/upload and charges 1 MB per extra. Considering this if I wanted to download Windows Vista Beta 2 (3.14 GB) I would have to shell out around 3000-4000 Rs. Since 700 MB gets consumed for my regular work.

I looked at plan available for MTNL and found out that they have a plan (DSL 590 NU) which provides free download in night 12.00 AM till 8.00 PM. I found it quite acceptable since I can have download vista beta 2 in nights and would not be charged.

The plan cost me extra 200 but it is worth it since I always run over my allocated 700 MB. So I submitted the change of plan application to the nearest Sanchaar Haat. Amusing that they do not allow doing it online, which would be more convenient. Considering the fact that they are Sarkari it did not bother me much.

I submitted the application to the guy in Sanchaar Haat on 7th June 2006 and he assured me it will be done by next day evening. I was very happy but when I go to internet to my account next evening I found that nothing has changed. Next day I called the 1504 (MTNL Customer Service). The guy told me that the plan would be changed only 1st of next month.

I was shocked to know that. It compelled to think me that why they do that. The only answer was their convenience. It would be easy for them to calculate the usage and other charges if they do it on first of month. I was appalled to my deduction. They would not be doing it manually so what if the software has to calculate the differences of previous plan and next plan? Can you imagine that they are asking a customer who is bringing more business (earlier plan was for 399 I am opting for 599) to wait for a month so that they do not have to be bothered about calculating the difference of plan. I must say “It Happens Only in India”

I am wating for the day when Airtel is availalbe in my area and I say Good Bye to MTNL. Not because they have poor connectivity or so but because they give a damn about me THE CUSTOMER.

yup both MTNL & BSNL has the same goddamn problem. they dont give a damn about customers. even i had a lot of problem with it. thats why i switched to airtel. Almost every govt owned business has the same problem.:@

Final verdict privatize BSNL & MTNL only then can we see any improvement

a Few people here already have d'loaded Windows Vista Beta 2 and some even installed it! . you could have asked them instead of trying to change plans with an idiotic provider like mtnl etc.

thats all I can say ..

psst, where are you from , asheshb ?

Hi broar94,

Easy said than done. I could not find anyone near vicinity to do so. Plus I have a lot to download apart from beta2. RC1 will be released in Novemeber.

actually here in mumbai.. you could just call up 1504 and tell em that you wanna change your plans. and they would change it in 2-3 days max!! yes sometimes they dont.. but largely they do change the plans quickly :)..

i guess we are better of here in mumbai then.. since we dont have that sancharhaat here !

I agree bsnl/mtnl customer care is not top notch but dont count too much on airtel either. Their customer care ppl are parrots and if u keep bugging them too much they have their own way of dealing. Sadly this is the state of customer in india. :(
