Is any one else facing a peculiar problem?

For last couple of days, I can't download any thing at a decent speed over HTTP. I mean mostly it hovers around 10kbps. And the download is not smooth, sometimes it stops and then starts again. I am on up to 2mbps plan.

First I though it's the problem of slow server from I am downloading file. But then Speedtest too gave weird results. Like .13mbps download speed (horrible) and .20mbps upload speed (I think ok for 256kbps connection)

Torrents are relatively better. I also feel latencies seems to have gone up (though they were never too good with MTNL), making Youtube a pain to surf nowadays.

everything's fine on my end.

what's your snr / attenuation? and ur uplink/downlink speed (from ur router's page)

Here's mine.

SNR is ok at 23

Uplink is also ok at 256 and download link is 2013kbps (it has always been 2013)

its decent only if you live like >2 km from the exchange.

The lesser, the better.

Neways, see if your lan cable is working properly (you may wanna try connecting your router via usb and see if it solves the problem)

Also check whether its not a firewall issue or some spyware hogging your bandwidth.

you may wanna try this on another os like a bootable linux distro like puppy linux or a fresh install.

if this doesn't resolve the issue, I guess its time to dial 1504

Yes, exchange is around 2km.

BTW, I don't think there is any problem with LAN cable because in torrents I am reaching speed of up to 60-80KBps and I believe right now I am downloading a couple of torrents which are not pushing the limits (tracker issues, public tracker, congestion). But with HTTP downloads/direct downloads, the speed doesn't go beyond 15KBps.

I am wondering if MTNL is throttling speed for NU users ;) (may be Torrents are unaffected because of low-level encryption in uTorrent)

I am also quite sure that firewall is not creating any problem. But yes, it could be spyware. I scanned comp using ESET a few hours ago but it did not catch anything. Will give bootable linux distro a try later today.

It's so frustrating. Just like living in 256kpbs times again :@

Today I spoke to a couple of chaps in MTNL. Apparently there are issues with Optic Fiber Line in my area... I hope they sort them out soon :@

Finally, the MTNL chaps nailed it. There was some problem in local systems. From today the speed is normal.

But every time I deal with these morons, it's an experience in itself. This time I had a fight with an 'MTNL engineer' who was dead sure that nothing is wrong at their end and my problem is because either my router is faulty or there is some problem with my computer

good to know the problems solved.

I have had problems with MTNL but they are rare. However, it has always been a problem at their end :P

Gotta smooth talk them every time to convince them. It doesn't help my case too as like you, I bought my own router and have been using it from day 1. So I invite their "engineer" home to convince them it is indeed not my router.

And I dare not tell them that I use my system in Bridge mode. My opening line:

"I don't see the PPPoE light. hellp!!!!!"

They only respond to a few "Pavlovesqe" phrases.
