MTNL Dlinked

I was having some trouble with my phone line so I called a lineman.

Though the trouble was not related to broadband, when the lineman saw that I have a Dlink modem, he asked me if my broadband is working is fine. He was saying that MTNL no longer supports Dlink modems and many people who had it saw frequent disconnections until they changed the modem.

There is no explanation why it would be so and I believe he had no idea of what he was talking about. But he told me that in my area only, all the people who have Dlink modems have been told to change them with the one provided by MTNL.

Delhi folks, is it true? Have you experienced any trouble with MTNL and Dlink

nope. fud.

they either want to sell their own cheapo Huawei modems / just giving an excuse for their sloth

although people have claimed that the adapters for the dlink modems are flimsy, and there may be some iota of truth in that but i believe that's cause they bought their modems through mtnl / second hand.

my retail dlink modem works flawlessly and I keep it on 24x7. 2 years old and still working great.

^^ same here. My Dlink is working fantastic for last three years.

But I don't think it was FUD. It could be misinformation because these folks also said that the modems they supply are POS. But they said it is the fault of "officer".

A few days ago when there was some issue in my boardband, the MTNL service guy on spotting the DLink router said "Dlink, ther's ur problem!"
I was like fcuk no! and then he said even we've stopped using it.

So I guess MTNL has lost faith in Dlink.

yep...MTNL has some issues with DLink....

the first thing the helpline people ask is the modem model.

anyways...i have some el cheapo UTStarcom router provided by MTNL....works fine! :)

So there is indeed something going on.

Of course, MTNL had stopped using Dlink modems and instead giving Chinese ones because they were cheaper. But Dlink was/is working fine. The problem I think is that MTNL (or rather say its babus) doesn't want people to have much control over their connection and hence they are pushing for devices that give end-user bare-minimum options.

In fact, I once had a shouting match with a senior MTNL engineer when I went to him to complaint about some problems in my line about one year back. I told him I am not getting the promised speed and he asked me how can I be so sure about it. So I told him I can check it from 192.168.... and also that my SNR and other line parameters are screwed. this is how conversation went:

Me: So, you see signal-noise ratio is very bad on my line.

Engineer: That is fine, but why do you access router configuration page. You are not supposed to do that. That is property of MTNL.

Me: No it's not. That is my modem. I bought it and I will use the way I want it.

Engineer (taken aback by the fact that I am using my own modem): Ok but still if you access your router configuration page, it will create troubles.

Me: And how is that? And how am I supposed to tweak my connection or open ports.

Engineer: Open ports? Why do you want to that? We have given you a connection and that is sufficient. We make all arrangements at our end and customers are not supposed to open 192.168... By the way who told you about this configuration page.

Me: That is none of your business. What I am saying here is that my connection is having trouble and that I am accessing 192.168.... is not an issue.

Engineer: No, but if you access that page, go figure out the problem yourself. We can't help. What if everybody starts opening 192.168...

By this time, I was furious so I told him that I am wasting my time talking to him. I told him to calm down and stormed out of his room. I knew he won't do anything about the issue. The issue was later resolved but I had to pull a few strings.

lol. what an ass. I bought my own modem too from day one and I am the one who is condescending on such "engineers". They don't know squat anyways so I open my conversation by saying that I don't see a PPPoE light on my modem and can't connect. No need to say anything else

Its appears that MTNL/BSNL have a greater profit margin by selling these obscure chinese modems than by selling dlink, or some babu got paid off to spread misinformation :D

Dlink router have problems due to their firmware not getting updated

All May 2005 Batch Dlink routers have been replaced by MTNL due to the firmware issues

If you guys have your own routers, maybe it might not be affecting you, plus it all depends upon the model no. of the Dlink router you are using.

I have the GLB-502T, the same which is often maligned

btw, firmware can be updated easily though I never touched mine. I feel mtnl guys peddled low quality equipment which they got at wholesale discounted prices. the retail ones were slightly more expensive, yet I bought the latter.

I feel the model got blamed coz this this was the first one they started using when they brought adsl to the masses, and all the brunt fell on the modem whenever things got awry :P

The best way to deal them is to act dumb.don't show that you know anything. Even at times I did lie them about my modem make and model no. just to get better service. Whenever the Lineman comes to my house, I swap my dlink modem with my friend's bsnl Chinese one. because of this he can't make any excuses.

Because if they see Dlink one, they would simple put blame on it even if the there is a problem with telephone line

Ask him to get his mtnl chinese modem and start the internet on it to demonstrate it works, and then take it back..That will make sure the line is clear, rest you can also tweak..

Im on bsnl, and at the outset i overwhelm the engineer and make sure they know that im no noob, that generally sorts them out..besides they are engineers for namesake, dont know shit..

I'm using the GLB502T modem as well. Was having a lot of disconnection issues 2 months back only during 10:30PM to 2:00AM. It would often disconnect at this point & from thereon there was no stopping it. It went away automatically though. I did suspect a router issue, but then realized why would it only disconnect at one specific timeline & not during the day. Now I assume they "fixed" something from their end. So all the jazz about DLink & MTNL getting a divorce is total bull.
