Mtnl Launches IPTV

1. What is IPTV service:

TV service which is delivered using IP (Internet Protocol) technology - this is the same

technology which is used in Internet Services . In this service the TV channels are

encoded in IP format and delivered to TV through a Set Top Box. The IP TV Service

also includes Video on Demand Service which is similar to watching Video CDs / DVDs

using a VCD/DVD player. Movies, Instructional Videos and other content shall be

available to customers in the IP TV Services.

2. How this service functions :

The three main components in delivering this service are -

· TV and Content Head End - where the TV channels are received and

encoded. Also other content (Video's) are stored at Head End. MTNL has

signed agreement for this with M/s IOL.

· Delivery network - which is MTNL's Broadband network and MTNL's

telephone line. (Landline).

· Set Top Box - The Set Top Box is required at the customer location for

converting the IP signal back to TV signal. The STB shall be connected

between MTNL Broadband Modem and customer's TV.

3. Who shall be providing the Set Top Box:

The STB shall be provided by M/s IOL.

4. What are the tariffs for the service:

Tariffs shall be announced shortly.

5. Any pre-requisites for IPTV Service:

MTNL Landline telephone with Broadband connectivity is required for these services.

6. What services shall be available:

Bouquet of TV channels and Video on Demand services shall be available initially

during trials. Other services / content shall be introduced progressively.

7. Whether customer shall be able to use normal telephone and internet service

along with IP TV Service -

Yes, all the three services can work together -

- Normal Telephone service

- Broadband Internet service

- IPTV service

yeah finally they are here... shall wait for the tariff... bloody buggers should introduce unlimited soon dunno wtf they are doing!! sheesh

Hmm.....I was thinking of cancelling my mtnl line since I use tata now. :) Maybe now I'll keep mtnl and cancel TATA :ohyeah: But i'll need unlimited BB from mtnl first.

Sounds great...wt channels do we get thru it ... same as cable tv ?? hope they got a trial offer for it :)

It seems the technology is from Israel - "OPTIBASE DIGITAL VIDEO HEADEND".
Optibase enables India large-scale IPTV

"We are proud to be among the first companies to take part in the implementation of IPTV in India. Optibase has recently opened an office in India to support its sales and marketing activities and is reaping the first fruits of this endeavor," said Lior Fite, Optibase's vice president, marketing. "Equipped to meet the challenges of IPTV, our MGW 5100 has been designed to meet the unique requirements of the various operators and service providers - from MPEG-2 migration to MPEG-4 AVC digital head end system deployment. We look forward to being part of the IPTV momentum now taking place in the region."

How're they gonna' do it on 256kbps? 512 is the minimum to watch youtube videos smoothly. Or will they transfer the data via another dedicated line?

IPTV is not dependent on ur Internet Bandwith or MB limits. Its just that one telephone line brings in three signals (totally different): Voice, Internet and IPTV. Even I am waiting for unlimited plan from MTNL but it has nothing to do with IPTV as its totally different and wont get deducted from ur daily MB usage of Broadband or the speed limit of ur broadband connection.

But on the Flip side, getting 3 connections from one provider is a good idea for the provider instead of the consumer.

Suppose if u have line problems with the provider then:

-No Phone

-No Internet

-No TV

And we all know that MTNL has the best customer service in the world... :P

Think over it!

Sheesh man...looks like we are gonna have regular channels through iptv too, dunno who's gonna pay for iptv when cable is so cheap...was hoping for a few foreign channels atleast ... on demand service seems to be the only advantage apart from the potentially better quality

^^Read. :P

The first brodcasters in line for iptv are sony, star and zee...i guess the charges must be included in the bills

:ashamed: what i meant was if they do broadcast pay channels? Confused it a little bit with the STB...

A setup box is a mandatory requirement for IPTV, it does not depend on channel selection. :hap5:

how exactly would you go abt connecting it?? my tv and comp are in two different rooms.. yes there is a telephone line where the tv is. but that too is at the other end of the room where the tv is located...

If anything goes kaput, there will be total information blackout!!

BTW, is this service available all over the country immediately or is it some sort sort of a trial run available only in a select few cities??? And how is this service compared to DTH ???

Read in TOI yestday, It's just offering 24 channels for 199pm at the moment, expecting to have 200 channels shortly. DTH is a much better option, considering it's wireless so no physical dependencies.....unless the set top box goes bad :(
