Just got a message from MTNL, thought of sharing it.

[TD="bgcolor: #FFFFEE"]Over the past 2-3 years IP addresses have become scarce commodity. This is mainly due to cost benefits derived from the packet switching. All telecom networks are now built on IPv4 addresses. Existing IPv4 addresses are too inadequate to meet the ever growing demand for IP addresses.
Worldwide, most of the countries have migrated to IPv6 in place of Ipv4.Number of IP adresses in version 6 (IPv6) are more and Department of Telecommunications under Governement of India has envisaged a plan for migration to IPv6.
In line with the advise, MTNL is upgrading existing network elements to IPv6. Therefore it is imperative to have customer owned modems(CPEs) to be of IPv6 compliant. All prospective customers while purchasing modem of their own, should ensure that purchsed modems are IPv6 compliant.Similarly existing customers who use their own modem also have to ensure that modem is IPv6 compliant.
Hope, You will co-operate with MTNL in this endeavour.

AFAIK, most of the modems/routers are IPv6 compliant, but this maybe the first from a PSU.

The current modems they've given us at the start are not iPv6 compliant at all.. wonder how long they're gonna take to complete the full "change/upgrade" exercise for their own equipment.

As it is i don't know if most of the ADSL wifi routers here are ipv6 compliant.

not likely.. ipv4 will still be supported by network architecture for quite some time

Guys, dont freak out.. even if they're not ipv6 compliant, MTNL's and the rest of the world will still have v4 legacy support.. MTNL will change out their routers in their own sweet time when they have stocks of the new routers.

If you have your own router.. just look up the manufacturers page to check the specs..

IPv4 legacy support will remain even after IPv6 switch.

Also if want IPv6 and dont want to buy new router, just switch to Bridge mode and let OS handle IPv6. All u'll need is IPv6 compliant OS like Win7.

how will the modem forward the ipv6 address in the first place if it does not understand it? even if the modem is in bridged mode, it will still need to decrypt what is coming at it to forward it to the os in whatever language the os understands.

Well....... I will chk tht once IPv6 starts on MTNL.....

My understanding is tht, let router handle ADSL part and let OS handle the PPPoE part in Bridge mode where IPv6 will be involved.:p

U maybe right but we'll hav to wait n c...:)

Broadband access layer is not yet v6 (neither it is planned in foreseeable future). Enterprise MPLS and Internet services from MTNL/BSNL have been. However the core is still v4.

My Internet leased line services from Airtel, Tata, other ISPs are still IPv4. MPLS - which is yet to be implemented - too is IPv4 (Airtel).

Now evey gali/moohallah will have crash courses and loot for teaching IPv6 and joiners will be freshers, noobs to pros!! :p
