MTNL network problem

I am using the 495 DSL combo plan since a couple of moths now. Earlier I was using the 1GB/month plan.
Obviously the speed 320 kbps is much lower now but off late I have been having severe problems with the net. The status LED on the ADSL modem keeps blinking. The speed fluctuates and drops to zero as can be seen in my uTorrents window. At that time the status LED on the ADSL modem remains off.
One day I noticed on the uTorrents graph that I would have download happening for almost exactly minutes after which it would go off. Turning off and on the ADSL modem would restore the download for another 5 minutes and I kept doing that several times.
I have already complained a couple of times and all I got was two docket numbers.
I am not sure if this is a problem with the MTNL network or the modem. What do you guys think?
I may be needing a Wifi modem later and I thought it may be worth just applying for them to change the modem to wifi. So the other question I have is: do all adsl wifi modems (or at least the one supplied by MTNL) also have one or more wired ethernet LAN ports too? AFAIK all those I have seen have 4 ethernet ports.

Problem is with your ADSL link. It has to be constant on the modem. Might be a problem in your telephone line.
It happens sometimes in rainy season ... better keep in touch with MTNL CC and keep calling them :P
No problem with modem or other h/w parts.
and yes.. today almost all wi-fo modems and routers come with 4-port inbuilt switch

My telephone works perfectly without any background noise. There is no parallel line. In fact I use a 1+1 cordless with a base unit and dual handsets so i don't need a parallel line.

The CC tells me to complain at 198 where I am allotted a docket number.

Keeping the phone off the hook actually loads the line more than when it is on hook so how would it help?

What should be the condition of the various LEDs for a good condition? Which should be on, which should be off and which should be flashing? For me the status led and the lan node led keep flashing while the others are steady on.

I seem to remember that you can check certain line conditions like snr etc. Can someone guide me to the right link for that?

I recently got the wifi modem provided by MTNL and yes it does have the 4 wired ethernet ports. So dont worry with regards to that.

hey bud if u in mumbai call 12540 thats the server room no and they are damn good at handling all issues, far more better then those fools on 1504

^ Thanks Vishal. I will do that.

Tell me, can I call that number from any phone or it must be MTNL (or it must be MTNL landline)

Can I call only during working hours and if so what are they?

The 12540 doesnt work on my phone... maybe cause i hav incoming only plan... but others can try and tell. any alternative for the above no. .

^^ 12540 will only work using MTNL telephone landline. Its like those 1800xxxxxxxx numbers which work only through landlines.

I have been trying that 12540 number but I keep getting the message that it is busy. Do I have to try it from the same line where I have the broadband connection or can I also call from a different place?

^^ It will usually come busy so when that comes, try after 5-10 minutes. It will get connected so dont worry. Also it is not compulsory to dial from same landline where your broadband is, but when the lady/guy comes on phone tell them your broadband telephone landline number.

only MTNL landlines

further updating.

That is the server room no and best way is using the MTNL landline, no compulsory the same no but yes as posted above, do inform em of ur landline no when u get in touch with them.

Got them today and told them my problem.

I have been monitoring the problem of late. The upload speed look pretty ok at about 210 kbps.

The download speed fluctuates a lot. I get almost 320 kbps (which is what my plan is) at times. Other times it comes down a lot. My line parameters look quite good both SNR and attenuation look good to me. Most severe problem I have is with voice chat. Usually I cannot hear the other party but they can hear me well. Skype call drops repeatedly.

Over the weekend I tried to ping the gateway listed in my status and found that it was wildly fluctuating between about 800 ms to 4200 ms. Usually over 3000 ms. Yesterday evening too the ping time was high and there were many drops. After a while of use, the ping came down to about 30 ms. Don't know what is happening. Today I managed to get 12540 and they politely listened to me and said they would check it out.

I have been tempted to go for a faster plan but I am not sure if that will solve my problem. Skype worked fine before with the same plan so why pay extra?

My uTorrents downloads are slow but I can live with that.

BTW I have observed that my torrent uploads speed is often higher than download speed.

Finally some progress. The 12540 people didn't seem to have solved the problem. Yesterday I called good old 1504 and pleaded for help. They gave me the number of the person in charge in my exchange - someone called Mrs. Murgud. I actually managed to get through to her. She said she would check and call me. I normally do not expect anyone in MTNL to ever call back but she was as good as her word and called a short while later. She said the problem is with the line quality. I told her my ADSL status shows pretty good numbers for SNR and line attenuation but she maintained that the problem was with the line. She gave me the number of one Yadav to get the line problem fixed. I spoke to Yadav and a short while later one Misraji appeared at my door. He checked and said there was disturbance on the line. He reconnected the joint that was just outside my door. He said some more work is required on the cable at the junction box on the road but he couldn't do it then as it was raining heavily. He said he would attend to the task when the weather lets up for a while or the rain would damage the connections of a lot of other people.

My problem is not fixed yet but at least I am making some progress. I had also written an email to the GM yesterday and I got a reply with the same set of telephone numbers with which I have been making some progress. Persistence pays. You need it with MTNL.
