Hi guys,
You might find this post little irrelevant but i cant think of a better place to post this.
I've been made an offer to change my work domain to game development, im not sure what kind of challenges and career growth i cud get from this.. I request guys who have been working on game development or know about the domain give me guidance as to take or reject this offer.

Work will be on consoles, ps3, ps2, xbox etc

Thanks
MAx

If you are looking for a career only in India

and

if you are spoilt for choices in other IT domains

and

If Game dev/design isnt a passion

then do stay away....

Because of the limited opportunities in this field at present, job hopping is not so simple...

Moreover game dev in India means essentially working on casual games...Lot of the hyped words by companies is eyewash...for all you know, all you would be doing for the nest 5 years is porting some snakes and ladders game into the blitz engine...

We dont get enough next-gen game dev/design work here.

Client is EA !!!!!!!
work is on cell engine

am a senior engineer working with tata elxsi

i already opted to get into it as i'll still get to work on middle ware for the consoles...

Thanks for the advice guys :-)

Dude, stop spreading wrong information!!!

Few companies in India have worked on next-gen titles like Microsoft's Forzamotorsport 2, EA's ProStreet, Codemaster's DiRT, Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing 3 & 4 & a lot more!!! A lot of studios outsourced their works to Indian game development companies!!!

And I know this as I am working in a game development co. here in India as a Game Artist & have worked on the above mentioned game titles!!!

Max7386 dude, if you have interest in gaming you will surely enjoy working in game dev. industry!!! Best of Luck :D

Well, i do not have exp in game dev.
gotta learn on the job....
Thanks guys, i appreciate the inputs :-)

hmm...can we expect a few beginner game tutorials from u in future :ohyeah:

As everyone said above, you gotta have a passion for game design and development, in order to get job satisfaction in the game dev industry.

I remember Romero, Carmack and all others in ID telling tales about spending sleepless weeks, away from their families, working on Doom and other games.

Thats why all their games mention their families, in the end credits.

Well, I do know what I am talking about :P

Hardly anyone in India does next-gen Game development(coding) work... There are at best a few next-gen design work that comes through.

Besides with only a handful of companies in India doing good work, job hopping is not easy...

So, unless you really really want to do this,. DONT.

John Romero?? man he made this game called Daikatana. it was seriously one of the worst games I ever played.

sleep less nights are common place in all design and dev jobs.

i feel working on multi core CPUs on the consoles will give an edge.
as i do not have expertise in graphics and stuff, i wont be put into such
work.

Will restrict myself to system level programming, C, c++ and OS stuff. which i like doing.
