Multiple (4) desktops instead of one

am using Compaq V6307TU Notebook along with Ubuntu 9.10 This afternoon perhaps some button was pressed and now it's showing 4 screens instead of 1 of equal proportions. So I am having 4 boot screens and 4 desktops instead of 1. How to restore it back to 1??
 
congrats on upgrading to quadra desktop...............hahha jokes apart, Compiz is the name of the software which is giving u 4 screens, its a feature that you unknowingly activated it find compiz & then toggle the options of single screen, I am not on Ubuntu right now else would have given u exact steps.
