Ethnocentric behavior in some format or another is prevalent in India. It is a governing factor for most activities and thought processes. Indians love to get uncomfortably personal.

Talent has no creed/caste/color barrier.
I heard this kind of thing during renting one's homes, but even for a job. Give me a break man.

BTW its TOI crap, Take lite.

So true that twos wrong don't make a right. I don't understand how this logic even works for our countrymen. Whenever something wrong is happening in our country and is pointed out, people justify it with the line that our country is only being just as shitty as some other so and so country, but yet, somehow people love to claim that its better and greater than other countries.

The other day, a girl in UK blogged about her own experiences about safety for women, especially tourists in India. The reaction from Indians was of two types. One group is trying to justify whatever happened to her by downplaying it and or saying it happens in other countries. Another group was trying to promote ganging up on her and harassing her on line to stop her from writing and force her into removing her existing posts. They for some reason think that would save the countries reputation from being tarnished by their actions.

Even for this particular case, people don't think this sort of discrimination is wrong or down played, some even justifying it with the line that it happens in other countries, but people crib when they see the consequences of type of attitude which in the Indian context ranges from religious conversions to terrorism, communal politics, feminism and biased laws.

A lot of carefully 'veiled' discrimination does take place in India too, especially when it comes to Top/Key management positions.

Seen a lot of that actually. This only happens to be the first time I have seen discrimination expressed so freely on paper apart from the time my colleague told me about his rejection over phone from HR guy based on his region.

When I was working in Chandigarh, I happened to overhear the casual conversation of a couple of Telugu guys who worked with another reputed company in same building. One of them was apparently a manager and the other a team member and they were talking in typical Hyderabadi style accented Telugu mixed with Urdu and Hindi.

Roughly translated, it goes something like, "These north Indians are beneath our level and should be kept under foot. They should be crushed under foot if they ever try to rise up" He was also telling how he would never let any North Indian get a promotion as long as he is a manager. Just imagine what else he would be doing with his authority.

Also, seen a Telugu Brahman manager who showed favouritism towards the Brahman's in his team. While he would not make it apparently visible, he would still not let any Telugu guy belonging to a lower caste or any north Indian get a promotion even if they deserve it. One north Indian who joined his team with an experience of 6 years remained in the same role for next 6 years while other people with same experience went 3 grades above him. When this guy got deputed on temporary assignment to my group, the Lead architect that we reported to at the time saw the situation and his performance and negotiated a promotion for him.

My sister also told me how one of the members in the interview panel at Infy wanted to reject everybody except upper castes in Hindu's. Despite complaints from panel members, he was not immediately removed from the interview panel, later he was removed, but apparently he got into another panel.

The firm made a mistake telling him the real reason. Should've given some bullsh!t reason to reject him. That's how it works.
Amateurs.
I'm surprised about that too. The flip side is what legal action can be taken. None, that is why it ended up in the papers.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Like cliches?

Seriously, people have been making such choices since the beginning of humanity. Isn't who I decide to work with a part of my 'freedom'? Of course, such choices can have economic costs and are not sustainable. However, I think it is stupid to force me to rent my house to or hire someone I do not with to live/work with.

Tribalism is human. It has survival value. Making laws against things which are deeply ingrained in our psyche will not work.

I beleive this is happening all along. The problem this time was some idiot just made it so obvious by writing it on the paper.

We don't live in a perfect world. Everybody have certain preferences and likings according to which he conduct himself. A person is good for you doesn't mean he would be good for the other person as well.
And there are stubtle ways to reject them. And there is nothing wrong in that. But in this case, I am amazed by the way these things were carried out so openly.

For eg: if someone wants to rent a house then he might have a certain criteria that he should only be vegetarian or married and from the same caste etc. It makes it easier for the owner to deal with the tenants. Similarly, if someone wants to open a business or work jointly on a project. Then he would prefer someone who might be like him or have certain traits that he would find easier to deal with.

I have seen Muslims discriminating against Hindus and vice versa. But, either way things are handled in a subtle manner.

It's funny how a certain set of politicians now are justifying and pressuring the government for having reservation based on this particular incident.

While this is done by all. It's basic human nature. People make friends, marry etc on a certain basis. They feel comfortable with those kind of people only.
Similar groups are made for protection and sustainability.

But this time the company didn't had the social skills to deal with these things. These kind of companies should not be allowed to function.
