Surprised to see no threads yet on the MWC 2017 so far. The annual Barcelona event kicked off yesterday, and there were few surprises; several leaks from the previous few weeks were confirmed.
Here's a summary of day one:
1. Nokia
The most talked about tech news probably in the recent times. The iconic Nokia 3310 has been resurrected again, with a few upgrades. Color display; 22 hrs talktime and 1 month standby time; 2 MP camera; 4 different colors; microSD slot; Snake game; and of course, the ever famous Nokia ringtone - all are included in the new iteration, by HMD Global
Three android smartphones were also introduced, with the Nokia name - Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.
2. Samsung
No mobile phone announcement from Samsung this time around. Instead, three new tablets were introduced. The Galaxy Tab S3 is a 9.7" android device, and comes with stylus in the box - clearly targetting the iPad pro 9.7. The other two are the Galaxy Books - in 10.6" and 12" variants. Both run Windows, and are hybrid laptop/tablet devices, with stylus and keyboard included. The smaller one runs the 7th gen Core M3, while the larger one runs the 7th gen Core i5. No information about the pricing.
3. Blackberry
Yeah.. BB still exists. And in a desperate attempt to stay relevant to the times, the Blackberry KeyOne has been announced. It's android, has a physical QWERTY keyboard and comes with the usual security features that BB is famous for. However, it runs on SD625, and yet is priced at around 500 USD. Wonder if it would still get sustainable sales figures.
4. LG
The LG G6 has been announced. Features a large 5.7" display, with a 18:9 aspect ratio. Still, the size remains as compact as a routine 5.2" phone, due to insanely thin bezels. Oh.. and no more modular design.
5. Motorola
G5 and G5 plus have been announced. No idea about the details.
6. Huawei
The P10 and P10 plus have been announced. Both advertise their camera capabilities, given that they have maintained their partnership with Leica; the P10 plus comes with a F1.8 lens.
As a sidenote, most of the new android devices introduced come with Android 7.0, which is good. I guess that sums up most of the interesting highlights of Day one at the MWC. Let's hope the rest of the days provide more interesting things to the tech world.
