Hi All...

It seems bad luck comes to me altogether...

..

My modem was all connected..but not turned on. After the lightning the modem never turned on. I took it to JTO and he promptly replaced it.
Nice guys are there in Govt.. :hap2: :hap2: He told me, After use take the plug off the socket and better if unplug the line cable too..
Its not a big deal...but is this the only way??... are You guys like this... I hope not...

I have a wireless modem. UT Starcom one.

Can i use any other??... I am thinking abt the Netgear wireless one... its cheap...

will that be also prone to lightning and all....

  @Lightning !

If lightning struck, you'll have more to worry about than just your modem :P

On a serious note, all Modems these can be turned on 24 hours. You might have got a a defective piece, which was bad luck on your part. Starcom is a decent company. But if you want peace of mind, talk to your ISP, and check what Modems are compatible with their connection, and get a Netgear / Linksys Modem.

Cheers !

technically i dont know what could be the reason for this, but i remember my asianet dataline modem ...which got friedup during a heavy rain:D

It is true this time it is high chance of lightning during afternoon(kerala).even if the cable are wired underground ,there can be chances of lightning enter somehow from various other links which stands outside.

While My previous sony tv was fried twice by asianet cable is another matter :|

I had my Huawei MT880 *DONE* on 2005 by lightning(which was replaced for a shortwhile for a utstarcom one).

.now ,I have d-link GLB-802C and a iball-ibaton brand new router as backup.(which is not at all used!LOL

both are wired and GLB-802C was replaced under warranty.

Tried the wireless UTSTARCOM router given by BSNL a week back.I must say ,the speed and responsivness of this router lags behind Huawei /linksys/even d-link ones.

???....

Anyone can answer the qns i asked???

Wireless one will be equally prone (or not prone). Will make no difference as far as lightening "proneness" is concerned. Only the ISDN modems are lightening magnets, as I was to learn the hard way - burnt along with a lot of equipment on the LAN

^^^^^^

You have no idea what you are talking about :)

Lightening can damage electronic equipment by travelling through cables. Make sure you unplug any lan cables or telephone cables coming into the house from outside during thunderstorms etc..

Lan cards/modems are frequent casualties during such storms.

plug your modem into a UPS with power surge stopping capabilities if you have one.

If your house is struck directly by lightning, your UPS will be totally fried. Lightning strikes usually have a potential of around 20k-30k volt or even more.

The only sure fire way of protecting electronic instruments is to unplug them and also install a lightning arrester in your house.
