my computer freezes right click doesnt work

harmeetmatta

Disciple
off late my computer has started giving weird problems...i use windows xp sp2 and some 4 days back 'my computer' started freezing...

when i double click on my computer from the desktop a window opens and the yellow bulb keeps flashing for atleast 10 mins ..... but strange thing is i can go to my drives by writing C: to go to c drive in the address bar and so on but i cant see the drives in my computer window.

even if i go to drives by writtin in the address bar it responds slowly and still there is a lag which wasnt there before...

also my right click doesnt work...anywhere i click on the desktop it freezes and same goes for the start menu as well....

strange thing is i can open applications by double clicking the icons on the desktop and they work well....

but if in a application i go to something like 'open' then the open window comes and the computer freeezes..

i hv tried a complete scan of my pc thru avg 8.5 and showed no viruses....tried one click maintaince from tune up utilities...that repaired some registry errors but the problem still persists....
i have done disk check also...no corruptions found....i seriously cant figure out what the problem is
i also restored to a previous date and still the problem persists....

i hv windows 7 on the same comp and it works flawlessly .....

it may sound weird but i want to confirm can dust in the cabinet be a cause for this ...?

any help frm u is appreciated...i m dying to get my windows back...cant afford to format...each drive is of 200gb and has like only 10 gb left in each drive....and i don think disk space is causin this cause since a month i have 10gb free space only in each drive....i hv 5 drives of 200gb each....

my comp config is intel quad @ 3ghz...2 gb ram...intel dg45mobo...9600gt graphic card

plss help :):):)

Well first things first. You say you also have Win7 installed on the same comp and its working fine. So we rule out any issue with hardware.

But that doesnt mean we rule out any hardware driver issue.

Its most likely a performance issue with the OS caused by some third party application.

So my first step towards this would be to boot in Safe Mode and check the System Behaviour.

To boot in safe mode, as soon as POST completes start hitting F8 and you will get a boot menu (This boot menu is if only XP is installed)

Select Safe Mode. Once booted if you find the behaviour fine, then go to

Start>Run>msconfig

Then go to services tab and on the left hand bottom check the box "Hide all Microsoft Services". Once thats done go click the button on left hand bottom that says "Disable All".

This will disable all the non-microsoft services. Now go to the start-up tab in the same window and again click on "Disable All". This disables the non-microsoft startup items that get started as soon as you login to windows.

Now Click "Apply" and then Close. You might get an error "Access Denied....." just ignore it.

Now proceed rebooting and system and let it boot normally in Win XP.

Login and check the behaviour. If its fine then its a third party app service causing problem.

Now you need to isolate which service by enabling one or say if there are too many then 5 at a time from MSCONFIG and rebooting the OS.
Let me know if this helps you.

my pc doesnt boot in safe mode...its like it shows all the file loading and then restarts....happens same for all three safe mode options....

Have you mounted any network drives recently? Use following command to unmount all network drives

net use * /d

See if this helps...

Okay, then when you hit F8, and the boot menu that you get select the following option

Disable Automatic restart on System Failure
By selecting this option it will halt at the error instead of rebooting. Let us know the error that you get in that Blue Screen of Death most likely.

C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\tsnpstd3.exe

Try unchecking these two files from msconfig. I suspect these files to be a malware...

ok guys this is what i tried

fixed the two files vsnpstd3.exe and tsnpstd3.exe from hijack this....dint see any result

tried the comman net use /*d in different ways because the syntax was coming wrong so ended up dint seeing any result but i got an error "system error 67 the network was not found" so even this din work

tried the option disable auto restart on system failure and my os booted perfectly with no blue screen of death....but still the os restarts when i select safe mode option ....

did disk fragmenting and was astonished to see that files contaied on average 1000 errors...so did defrag and it gt complete but gave error that some files couldnt be defragmented....heres the report

i m also uploading the files of the taskmanager

pls temme what to do next

i dint notice any improvemet...would also like to tell u that...whenever i go to connect to a netwrok....everything lags...i can open folders on the desktop...lissen to music files but cannot connect to internet at all....pls help :)

Did u install any programs recently ? why dont u try system restore once? Also from my personal experience when the computer doesn respond , apart from many other signs its also an indication of a bad sector HD. First thing u should do is try to figure out which drives are badly fragmented. Also its advisable to take a backup of ur data.Once through with that, formatting the HD can help u resolve the problem IMO.

@RadioHeAd
i don`t agree with you because now-a-days, most virus make a copy of itself in the system restore files. So a system restore is done the virus is come back.

You can try checking the your HDD for errorby using chkdsk at command promt

i think it can because of bad sectors but what i dont understand is that my windows 7 works great....if i m not wrng if there is a bad sector in the hdd that shuld affect win 7 also..rite?
i also tried chkdsk frm cmd but din work not many errors were found.....also did system restore to 1 week befores data and then d prob was still there...tried restore to 1 months back date nd restore failed....i seriously hv no clue wat 2 do...backup is not possible i dont hv any other external hdd...and out of 1 tb atleast 500gb of data i cannot afford to lose....pls lemme knw on this soon

not to give u the scares, but i feel u should arrange to take a backup of ur data soon enough in case ur hdd is dying. Also if that is the case the more u try to access the corrupt Drive the more chance of things turning from bad to ugly.

ok...i think theres some prob in my hdd

2days back,....my comp got automatically restarted ...and at the boot screen i saw an error stating that there is problem found in the hardware...

i donno how to react to this....can this be a fault in the sata cable ...or a bad sector in d hdd....??

pls suggest me some nice software where i can actually find out the root cause of all the problems i m facing in my windows xp ....

windows 7 still works flawlessly...

I am too lazy to read the whole thread again. If you have a seagate HDD download seatools from seagate website to find out any issues with your harddrive.

Alternatively you can first boot into recovery console using WinXP CD and at the cmd prompt run chkdsk /r command until it comes out clean. Which means if it says Found and Fixed one or more errors then run it again until it doesnt say that it found some error. Mind you this is only to determine any issue with file system and disk not the entire hardware.

But the easiest way is you can chkdsk the partition of XP from Win7 itself. That would be much faster and easier.
