CPU/Mobo MY CPU LAG LIKE SLOTH.NEED TO UPGRADE MY RAM HELP PLEASE

I HAVE AMD ATHELON 2 X4 640 CPU AND motherboard ASUS M4A78LT-M-LE..
ONE RAM SLOT IS DEAD AND ONE HAVE 4 GB DDR 3 RAM INSTALLED BUT AFTER INSTALLING FRESH OS ITS SLOWLY BECOME SLOW NO MATTER WHAT I DO.
I HAVE INSTALLED AVAST ANTI VIRUS FIREFOX AND ADOBE READER..
SO MY QUESTION IS CAN I UPGRADE TO 8 GB RAM IN ONE SLOT????
 
While there are ram modules with 8gb on them you can use, however i dont think that's your problem. a system that's slowing down a lot after a fresh os install could indicate other problems. My system is also running on 4gb of memory and i can't say i have performance issues. Also you mentioned one of the memory slots on your mb is busted so there could be additional issues that should be looked into.
 
What OS have you installed?
Win xp, 7 or 8 ?
RMA means give your mobo for repair/replacements if its under warranty.
Just blindly spending on 8gb ram wont do any good.
 
4gb ram is sufficient for normal use. Either there is some bloatware running in the background or there is a problem with OS installation/hdd/ram. Even my netbook with 2gb ram runs fine until I open up too many programs at once.
