Hi everyone!!!

This is my first post. I am planning to buy a P.C next week and my usage would be for basic internet surfing and playing games like counterstrike, Need for speed , Age of empire 3 etc. My configuration is the following. Please have a look and suggest any changes if needed.

Budget is 40k

Processor: Core 2 duo 2.6ghz/Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz
Mobo: Intel Dg33
Ram: 2 X 1Gb (Transcend/kingston)
Hard disk: Segate SATA2 320gb
Monitor: 17" CRT( LG/Samsung)
UPS: Microtek 600VA
Graphic card: 8600 GT 512mb DDR2
SMPS: Coolermaster extreme 600w
Cabinet:Any descent
Keyboard+ Mouse: Microsoft combo pack
I have some queries related to my configuration.

1. Processor: Is core 2 quad 2.4ghz recommended nowadays or core 2 duo 2.6 ghz is fine as the price difference between them is only 3k?Also if core 2 quad G0 stepping is unavailable ,then, is it ok to buy quad core 2.4ghz with B3 stepping?

2.Motherboard: Since i donot intend to oveclock in future so is Dg33 option correct for me?I have read reviews about Abit-ip35E that it has some double reboot issues, although fixed with bios updates but since i m not very techie I dont know about updating bios.
Another mobo, xfx nforce 650i also has some stablity issues according to reviews on the net.Hence is my choice justified here?

3.Graphic card: I am planning to buy 8600GT 512 mb DDR2 but people are recommending 8600GT 256 mb DDR3.Is this correct despite 8600 GT 512mb DDR2 having more memory than 256mb one? Please suggest.

4. SMPS: I have used online PSU calculator and it displays around 276w for core 2 quad and 252w with core 2 duo.Since i dont know any reliable PSU brands i m going for coolermaster extreme 600w.Please suggest some reliable and descent PSU brands. Also which cabinet would be the best in my budget. Will I need additional fans besides provided by cabinet?

5.Lastly can 17" LCD monitor be accommodated instead of 17" CRT in this budget? If possible, please suggest only good and affordable brand with response time less than 12ms.I have read about Samsung 740N syncmaster 17" monitor with 8ms response time but its price is around 9k.Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would be eagerly waiting for your responses.
Thank you....

my opinion: a c4quad processor is gonna be huge overkill for CS/NFS/AOE. Besides, you're getting only an 8600GT.

I would suggest you tilt your budget more in favour of , say, a large ( ~22 inch ) LCD and/or better sound :)

besides, if you're not going to OC ,then the AMD X2 5200 is great VFM!

As I always rant, please mention your place so that it would be better for people to suggest right place/product/price for you.

My take-

2. Go for IP35E

3. Get the 256mb GDDR3

Not sure, but i think you can get a better config for your budget.

You dont need a Quad, dual core is sufficient. Get E8190 which will soon be in the market, or the E8400 if you can extend the budget a bit (~ $ 200 = Rs 8000) IMHO, E8400 is the BEST EVeR VFM processor if its in that price range.

2.Motherboard: Since i donot intend to oveclock in future so is Dg33 option correct for me?I have read reviews about Abit-ip35E that it has some double reboot issues, although fixed with bios updates but since i m not very techie I dont know about updating bios.

G series has onboard graphics, if you are getting a separate GPU, get a P35 board--get a Biostar P35 as its cheaper. I dont like nvidia chipsets, they generally have compatibility problems although 680i is a popular chipset.

3.Graphic card: I am planning to buy 8600GT 512 mb DDR2 but people are recommending 8600GT 256 mb DDR3.Is this correct despite 8600 GT 512mb DDR2 having more memory than 256mb one? Please suggest.

256 MB option has faster GDDR3 memory hence a better option. 8600 is not the best mid range card from nvidia, you may want to consider second hand cards going way cheap these days that perform better. If you are running Vista, stick with 8600GT GDDR3

Get Corsair VX 450W PSU, Coolermaster Elite 330 or a Zebronics Cabinet. You will get HSF bundled with processor, you dont need to buy another one unless overclocking.

No idea about 17 inchers but Syncmaster is definitely good. You may want to check out Dell LCDs at www.dell.co.in

^^ +1 to that

if u cant get the e8xxx series, just take the e6750 as without OC both will have a 5% performance difference which wont be noticable

take::

e6750 (8k)

2 X 1gb ddr2-800mhz (2.2k)

biostar p35 4.8k (dunno exact)

320gig HDD (2.8k is it?)

8600gt 256mb gddr3 - 5.5k-6k depends on company

corsair vx450w PSU (around 4k and much better tham C-M PSU)

UPS

cabby (doesnt matter much unless u really want to OC so nething will be fine unless u care about looks)

i prefer logitech kb/mouse combi but its subjective (u r wrong if u disagree with me)

and the syncmaster 740N is a really gud monitor if u can stretch your budget a bit

most of the stuff u wrote was spot on :D

Thank you....

Here:

1. Go fer Quad only if u use gfx intensive apps like Maya or 3d rendering; If gaming is ur need settle fer a C2D say 6750. Else the quad's rest of the 2 cores're put to waste. And B3 stepping proccys run hotter than d G0 counterparts. So forget C2Q.

2. If u dont wish to o'erclock DG33 is fine; if the need arises u still cant. So why not pay the premium n settle fer an IP35E?? Its a good VFM mobo...

3. Dont look fer the amount of memory in a gfx card. Like comparing a 7950GX2 havin a 1 GB DDR3 over a 8800GT having 512MB DDR3.

See here:
VGA Charts 2007 | Tom's Hardware

Its sort of a mkting gimmick. Go fer at least a 8800GT which's currently worth the buck or a 8600GT with DDR3 mem.

4. CM Extreme 600w shud do fine with the rig; U may also settle for a POV Black Diamond 500w which's Sli ready as well... Wateve, look fer the amperage rating in 12v rails. At least net shud be more than 40-50amps.

5. With the above suggestions, calcul8 the budget n see if a 17" LCD fits. I guess it shud. If so settle for a Viewsonic 1712wb.. A good one albeit with only a VGA n no DVI...

First of all i wud like 2 thank you all for your responses and sugestions.

Now regarding my mobo query, I had initially planned 2 buy Abit ip35e but when i read reviews about its double reboot problem i have become a bit apprehensive to try that mobo since i m not very techie and if something goes wrong I dont know where 2 go or whom 2 consult.Do i really need to upgrade my bios to fix that double reboot problem in abit mobo or will it work fine as it is?

Also with biostar p35 mobo it has almost all the same features as Dg33 except dat biostar doesn't have onboard graphics.i know its p35 series and intel g33 series but all features are nearly d same in both of these.price difference also is not much around 200-300rs/-.Hence why is biostar p35 so popular than intel dg33?

All my other queries seem to have answered correctly. Thanks again...

1st .. abit ip35e the dual boot is not a problem .. it wont casue any harm to your hardware. and u can live with the dual boot

the bio p35 is popular coz u can overclock it .. while intel doesnt have overclocking option in their mobos .. or to say they are LOCKED.

so if you are planning to overclock then go for biostar..

yeah but i think with biostar we can only slightly overclock around 30% or so. isn't it??

Neways thanx for all your nice suggestions.I will definitely keep these points in mind while purchasing my P.C.

thnx again!!!

You can overclock more than that .. i am sure.. my friend oced his dual core for 1.6ghz to 2.8ghz on the biostar mobo .. and he could go further then that .. ia m sure..

Thank you....

Hmmmm... not a balanced rig by any means.

Here what I would go for in this budget (UPS not included)

Intel E6550 @ 7K (more than enough for your needs)

Biostar TP35D2 - A7 @ 5K (as you r buying gfx card no need to get an intel mobo with onboard gfx)

2X1GB 800 Mhz Transcend @ 2K

250GB HD @ 2.8K (you can add more later)

POV Black Diamond 500W PSU @ 2.8K (better than CM 600W extreme power. Compliant with ATX 2.2 standard)

Zebronics Bijli cabbie @ 1.1 (without SMPS)

Gfx HD 3850 (256 DDR3) @ max 10K ( an amazing VFM card. Almost triple the performance of 8600GT and double the performance of 8600GTS)

Samsung SH-203B DVD-RW @ 1.4K

Monitor: any 19" TFT with DVI @ Max 10K (with your budget you can easily get a good LCD)

Keyboard+mouse @ .5K (you can always change them later)

This is around 42K MAX. If it's over your budget, cut down on PSU and go for Powersafe silver 500W @ 1.7K

Also, a cheaper option for you could be AMD route. With everything same you can swap Processor and Mobo with Athlon 64 X2 5200 @ 5.5K and Asus M2A - VM @ 3.2K. This will bring down your budget to 39K. For 39 K this will be a very good value for money.
