My Graphics card is Dying. The old MSI Ti 4400 i had is giving way. AFAIR remember i have never overclocked it. Till last night it was working fine. Its in my second PC as of now and it was working just fine till yesterday night. It artifacting now. Even in DOS and that too badly.

It does get botted up till windows and as soon as you log on in windows, the moniter goes blank. I tried boting up in the VGA mode and seems like it getting booted into windows at 640*480 resolutions but thats too big for a 17". I tried turning up the res to 800*600 and it goes fine till there but it starts artifacting a lot. The moniter just goes blank as soon as the res is turned further up to 1024*768. I wonder what is causing all that. I tried cleaning the fan. The heat is not an issue as my GT is working fine in the same cabby. GPU Fan Combo has been cleaned throughly. Suggest me something guys. Help me make this baby live.

P.S. In case it dies i need another card. Similar power in terms of Ti 4400 but newer generation. How good is 6200. And is there any 6200 GT or something. BTW the new card i would be looking in for should be in AGP version and i dont need to game on a lot on this PC so a decent GFX card would do just fine...

remove the heatsink and replace the thermal pad or compound with something newer. It may have dried out.
Or it may simply be the case of age taking its tole.
And 6200 is strictly a budget card.
Good for desktop work and casual gaming without AA and AF.
If you dont plan to game on that machine then go for it or simply get something from last generation itself cheap.
By the way what brand is this GF4? I know a guy in mumbai who is supposed to be expert in old graphic cards. He repaired my dying Geforce3 which was artifacting due to capacitor gone bad. He traced it perfectly and replaced it with same rating industry quality capacitor and gave more life to my GF3. Works like charm for 7 months now. He repaired my friend's FX 5600 too. Maybe he can help if this dosent solve your problem.
Afterall what do you have to loose with dying card anyway? He charged me measly 100 bucks.

I got a MSI TI 4400 AGP 4x 128MB DDR. Thinking about talking the heatsink out and changeing the thermal compound. But for that i gotta find new mounting clips of the HSF as they are very delicate and would surely brak. I would have to keep the card in the freezer for 12 hours or so as the HSF Thermal PAD is stuck on to the core...

BTW Wouldn't 6200's be as good as the Ti 4400's

Also if i were you i would go in for the ATI chipset this time around as you already own the Nforce 4 SLI. Try the other one out even if it is a little costilier which i highly doubt...

Same thing happened to me back in December,my GF3 gave red lines all over the screen.
And would only do 640x480,any higher screen would go blank.
And since there were no sub-10k GF6s for AGP(I don't think they are available even now)
back then all I could do was get a 5700 256mb from xfx for then 6.2k.
I do not think it was a faulty capacitor coz a fualty capacitor usually has a tell-tale sign of bulging and leakage of fluid.
The cheapest AGP GF6 is the 6600GT(from xfx atleast) for 11.5k.
