My less than two years old laptop's hard disk (Toshiba 500GB) abruptly died today. There were no issues until windows hanged and I had to restart. The booting hanged at "starting windows". Since then, the booting hangs at bios screen. The hard disk is being detected in the bios prompt correctly. Do I need to replace my HDD or is there any chance of repairing it? And any chance of data recovery?

Firstly, if you use it for any important work, immediately remove the HDD, connect it to the internal SATA ports of a PC, then try to copy all data. That should be your first priority.

Secondly, get a new HDD, and use that as the previous HDD may not function reliably.[DOUBLEPOST=1365789236][/DOUBLEPOST]If however, you do not wish to buy a new HDD, after copying the data, do a clean format and use the same HDD. Should work for sometime reliably. Also, do give your laptop a good cleaning at the same time :)

Clean format doesn't seem possible as I am unable to boot even Windows setup disk. Even gparted live doesn't boot. I think the HDD isn't responding but not fully dead.

Purchasing a new HDD isn't a problem. However recovering my data is the first priority.

Is it possible to connect a laptop HDD to desktop?

I don't think gparted live's booting has anything to do with your hard disk.
Try this - unplug your hard disk, and see if your laptop boots up with gparted, or live linux distro.

It does boot when the HDD is unplugged. I'm now running the HDD Regenerator 2011. It has detected my HDD and is showing up bad sectors. Let's see of it can repair the drive.

Well, bad sectors can only be remapped and never repaired. Would suggest to partition out the bad sectors to use the drive again, this is what I did.

The random test found 540+ bad sectors(100%). I think that all the sectors have gone bad. I still don't understand how the HDD died abruptly without any prior warning.

I'll try connecting the disk to a desktop (or via external sub casing) if anything is left of it.

Please suggest a good 1TB HDD for my laptop.[DOUBLEPOST=1365859278][/DOUBLEPOST]So Flipkart lists only these two models:

Which one is better WD or Samsung ? I'm looking for one with better warranty.[DOUBLEPOST=1365910691][/DOUBLEPOST]no reply ?? c'mon guys, this is urgent!!!

go for the WD 1 TB Laptop Internal Hard Drive (WD10JPVT) ... this one is real good ..
i have a 500gb LPVT model and had a good experience

Ordered the Samsung one due to more favorable reviews in newegg and Amazon. Plus there is a sticky here against WD service quality.

well i have used a multiple of laptops at office and personal and based on experience i like the wd one's ... do note samsung hdd on laptop runs hotter in general and also
i hope you have not ordered online ... max hdd issues are due to manhanding and mismanagement in shipment .[DOUBLEPOST=1365959240][/DOUBLEPOST]do install HDD sentinel once you install your new hdd ... you will atleast be aware of the health of your hdd

I think if one or two sectors and even upto 10 sectors, HDD regenerator will be useful. But if its 540, then no software in this world can repair it..
