Adding an SSD is akin to giving new life to an aging system. Yes, it is not a solution to Firefox using lots of RAM, but everything else will become a lot quicker.
Buy any good SSD during the Black Friday deals. Opening the laptop and removing the dust is also very much needed IMO. It might not have anything to do with your issues but a regular cleaning is still recommended.
Installing the SSD should be a piece of cake. If videos on youtube aren't available for your laptop you can very easily follow the steps in the service manual. I changed the wire connecting the screen to the motherboard by myself for my Lenovo laptop by following instructions from the manual. Most things are plug and play these days.
