My Mini-Home Theatre-Suggestions

Hi guys. I am building myself a mini-home theatre for my small room (14 x 11). My budget is around 50k for the screen and the sound system. I am really new to all of this, so I need some help. This is exactly what I will be doing

1. First of all, watch TV for football, F1 and some other TV shows through Tata Sky. I think TV speakers should be enough for this.

2. Watch DVD Movies and DVD TV Shows through Philips 5150 DVD Player.

3. Watch HD movies (720p), by connecting the LCD to the comp via VGA cable.

4. Connect the PS2 through S-Video, and PS3 through HDMI.

Last 3 would require surround sound.

Now, for the screen, I am not really thinking above 26". I will only watch about 5 ft away from the screen, so anything above would be over the top (plus expensive).

I am thinking of Samsung LE26R74BDX. The listed price is Rs 39,999, so I guessing it would be available for around 35k, which leaves about 15k for the sound system. Here is where I need suggestions. I want to good quality 5.1 surround sound experience, nothing exceptional, but good quality.

I would really appreciate suggestions on which sound system to buy, and also suggestions on how to connect everything, according to my needs.

Thanks a lot in advance.

hey bro, i bought a samsung lcd 26' about a month back, an it costed me 32k with bill. Dont know if its the same one ur talking about here, i got the bordeaux one. So if u get that youl hav got 18k left for speakers, and you could probably get a sony home theatre for that price, though i dont know about their sound , jus saw an add in the paper for a few of them from 15k-30k. Take your pick from them. Should be the best solution. And if u want to use your existing dvd player, you could also consider logitech z5500 as the speaker choice, guess theyl be available for around 20k.

Cheers mate!! :ohyeah:

buy a 22 inch WS viewsonic PC monitor (18K) External TV tuner (not usb.. stand alone ~3k) and spend the rest of the cash on sound :D

If you already have a PC , and want to connect it to that , then an internal tv tuner will also be ok :)

@greenhorn, I thought about that, but in the end I would prefer the TV, because it's bigger, will have better contrast ratio, and really, quality is much better on the LCD (as far I have seen). I could increase by budget to around 25k for the sound, but nothing more than that.

After some research, I am considering buying a monitor, instead of a TV. A few questions-How will the picture quality of Tata Sky be on a 22" monitor? Also, will I be able to use some remote like that with TVs (it would be wierd without a remote)? Also, please suggest some sound systems. I am not really an audio freak, plus a very small room, so I am looking for something good within 20k (cheaper, the better).

Man Klipsch makes the best multimedia speakers, and as zhopudey has suggested they will come around Rs. 25k. I think they have an authorised dealer in calcutta, try searching them on google. These prebuilt sony, philips etc dont stand a chance in front of the klipsch. But they will shake the room pretty hard.

Picture quality will be great with Tata Sky on a 22' monitor. And once connected why wud you need a remote for the monitor, everything can be controlled by the tata sky remote(except for the monitor and speakers of course).

oops!!!zhopudey beat me to the reply...

Yup, I know about Klipsch. I once heard their stereo speakers (2.1), wow, what sound quality!!

A few questions-

1. Which 22" monitor would be best for TV and DVD viewing, and also PS2 gaming (I know PS3 would look great)? Also, doesn't Tata Sky have 640x480 resolution, but 22" WS monitors are 1680x1050? Won't the picture be stretched alot? And will a 5.1 channel sound good with Tata Sky?

2. Where will I get the connectivity options, like VGA, HDMI and audio connections? External TV Tuner? How much would that be?

3. What exactly do you mean by 'they will shake the room very hard'? Also, arn't Klipsch PC speakers? Will they be good in a HT setting? Also, are the wires long enough, that I can spread them throughout the toom?

Will I be connecting the speakers to the monitor, or the DVD player?

I am also considering a 24" monitor, to get FullHD, but I am not sure whether I could really make out the difference on a 24" screen?

Thanks for all the replies, and sorry for the questions, but I am totally new to all this

Edit: Without the remote, how would I put the monitor on standby? (Dumb I know)

buddy nakamichi, bose, bang and olufsen : all these brands charge absurdly exorbitant amounts of premium for their products, which they evidently dont deserve. They only make sense if u have loads of money and nothing to do with it.. which is not case here ..hehehe..

cheers!! :yeh:
