I have recently upgraded my comp from pentium to AMD (1st timer):

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium - AMD 3500+ (not venice but northwood :@ )
512MBx2 Transcend @400mhz
250 GB Sata Hitachi + 120 GB PATA Seagate Baracudda
ATI X300SE PCIe
Antec SuperLanboy (changed the rear fan 120mm to trilight 120mm) + Smartpower 450W
SOYO Media card reader in cd rack
Sony 720A DVD RW
Sony LCD17" 75F - 12ms
Logitech cordless keyboard + Mouse set
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

hmm hope its good - had a pretty tough time (&moeny loss) swapping things I dint like to change them - initially purchased MSI 480 mobo & iball grabitt, also returned compro tv tuner usb2 :@ also returned creative inspire 7900...

1) please advice if anything else needed or not ok as my system is on 24x7 so gets pretty hot even though I have'nt thought of overclocking.. (have bought artic silver have yet to apply it - the guy gave me just a tube with no box / no instruction said it comes like this only - prime abgb)
2) TV tuner am on the lookout for a usb tuner with fm - the compro or my cable was not good enough.
3) Want to install XP64 bit as dual boot but my floppy drive is konked (old one - once i use it then it collects dust & gets spoilt - next time I want to use it have to buy new :@ :@ ) & have got only 1 cd drive - so when I boot from setup cd I cannot provide it sata drivers & it changes the pata to drive C. even for installing 1st system I had to disconnect the pata to install on c. any ideas ?
4) can I change the heatsink fan to a 80mm blue led fan ?

:thanx:

An AMD Northwood ? Am not having my specs on right now . Am I reading wrong ???

And as for changing the HSF fan to a Blue LED fan, I don't think the HSF is 80mm in size. So u have to get an aftermarket cooler to do that.

oops my bad:rofl: newcastle :@

any suggestions for the cooler...from what i read here xp90 / 120 are good ? any price ideas ?

the starice is around 2400 but seems its not good enough...

1. What are your present temps like ? The Newcastle is a 130nm based process compared to the 90nm based Venice/Winchester, so temps might be marginally more. However shouldn't be all that high inspite of this. Make sure your HSF is installed properly, air flow through your cabinet is right, etc. And please.. Arctic silver is no magic paste ! It can help upto 2~3 degs, but dont expect dramatic 10C drops.

3. There are ways to integrate your SATA drivers into your WinXP install disc, thereby circumventing the need to use a floppy disk. Read up here : http://mt.maximumpc.com/2005/01/how_to_slipstre.html

4. Freaky is right, the standard fan on an A64 HSF is a 60mm one. You can't use any after-market 80mm fans. XP-90/XP-120 is undoubtedly good, except for one problem - its unavailability here in India. You'll have to get a friend/relative staying abroad to get it here for you, or you could have some stores dealing with international orders to ship it to you.

thanks a lot for that..

the asus probe states temp as 50-cpu & 55-mobo.

That quite high for motherboard and CpU ..... wat are ur ambient temps .... mine mobo(same SLI Premium) never goes above 38*c ...... no point in comparing prccy ttemps as i have a venice with starice it never crosses 40*c on stock clocks ..... anyways i have a 130nm processor a 2800+ it is also with starice ...... but even with stock cooler temps never goes beyond 48*c .......

In the mobo i will say that remove the HS and remove the original paste and put some arctice silver ..... but be careful not twist the heat pipe ..... i did on mine and the orientation of the HS was gone and temps were very high, then i opened it again and made it right :)

NICE!!
Congrats, especially for switching to AMD!!:hap2:

I bought a Sony FDD as a pal faced probs with Sata HDD as he installed XP!!
He said you gotta have Drivers on Floppy in FDD before boot or something!1
But a friend cut me a cd of XP prof with SP2 from his office- system booted smoothly!!
No need for FDD and the 2 floppies i purchased!! wot a way to waste 330 Bux!!:@
He later told me he installed SP2 separately!!:@

And why X300SE?? How much??:S
If you plan to get better card later, wouldn't a 6200TC been cheaper??
Or for few bucks more, 6600 non-GT with 256MB much better!!
Nothing wrong!! Just curious!!:cool2:

hey why r u compromising on the graphics card. go for 6600gt. ur buying an asus mobo which has nvidia graphics driver. also u can go for another card in sli mode in future. me using two 6800 gts in sli.

^^Hmm i wonder why you were using a fx5200 if you have 6800GTs in SLI

I never saw this blade ;) :P  hehe

@Rahul - will try that

@BIKeINSTEIN / kau_therock / Blade_Runner - the x300 was around 3k & 6200 was little more but with 32mb mem & the rest shared i think... & I plan to change to 6800 later, its just I am busted with the budget right now. 6600 was double.
:thanx:
