Considering what hosting the olympics cost, I would say lets spend the money elsewhere. How about better sporting facilities for kids around india.

Was not India kicked out of the Olympic Committee some years back.....? Talk about audacity, to want to host the event. And CWG is still stinking fresh. Many players might even refuse to attend if it is held in India.
 
^looking at the pollution problem in Delhi, it would be better to shift the capital to Ahmedabad.

For all the noise that was made before it started in the end it passed uneventfully. The same crap was said about south africa and brazil also with similar results.

Many players might even refuse to attend if it is held in India.

It was the noise which accelerated development for the CWG. Not a proactive approach.

Why do you say that ?

I recall lurid British tabloid coverage showing incomplete work a month or so before the games were to start. This raised FUD. You mean to tell me it was this coverage that got it going.

How about these reporters find something to shout about. the games passed without any mishap, and the same happened with world cup in brazil despite protests over the costs as well as in south africa with the olympics.

These events are a huge short term boon for builders and local business, its a burden on the tax payer. But still cities want to host them as it gives them unprecedented publicity.

No athlete of standing will boycott a major meet because of the location.

Russia should also not be hosting the world cup but nobody can do much about that also.

No, it din't pass uneventfully unless your definition of eventful is limited to some athlete dying. several workers died and many more injured. One of the stadium roof collapsed initially which thankfully happened before the athletes were there. There were several other smaller incidents happening even while the games were in progress. The food served to the athletes was unhygienic and caused problems to a few. Most of the stuff was suppressed from mainstream media. It is purely a matter of luck being on our side that none of the athletes were directly harmed during the games. On top of that, it was a major PITA for the public.

I would definitely not want any such sporting event to be conducted ever in India again. India doesn't deserve to host such events. Not only is a major PITA for the public and the tax payers whose tax money is being wasted, but the sole reason for conducting such events in India seems to be for politicians in ruling govt to make money. Last time, it was congress and now BJP apparently wants their due.

How much did it impact the big picture ? the games for all intents and purposes were successful. But you cant sell papers if you say that. oh no.

i was discussing this on foreign boards and i noticed lots of negative coverage BEFORE it began and then things started to quieten down.

This happens every where in the world a major event is held. You say govt i say its a boon for business. short term. puts the city on the map. About prestige. pride.
