CPU/Mobo NAS/ Download box

Greetings All ,

Need to make a NAS box which will primarily be used for storage/downloading and local network streaming.

Points to ponder are :

1) Very low power consumption
2) As low heat generation as possible
3) would be running without any Monitor / input devices (can be attached for setup)

Requirements are :

1) cpu+mobo (cheapest, coolest possible, should be able to connect 3-4 sata I /sata II drives )
2) Ram : 512 Mb / 1gb anything from corsair value to kingston value.
3) Hard Drive : 1tb ( 500 x 2 reliable calm and quiet, seagate or samsung ??? )
3) cool running power supply with low power consumption as box will run 24x7

Thinking of running it on Linux though can run it on Win 2003 server as well (very stripped down footprint) as i have a license for same.

Please mention prices/ price Idea if anybody has any for Delhi.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers !

Thanks H2O and Manu, both the configs look good to go, though for WD i am not confident, have lost 500gb data previously.

So will stick with Seagate/Samsung, 5400rpm drives(even slower if avail)

Thanks for all ur replies....cheers

I would recommend a Sempron LE 1100 and a 690G/690V mobo. Gigabyte would be nice

you really dont need 1GB for a NAS box

PS : why not get a dedicated device?

Greenhorn, thanks for inputs. This NAS box is gonna be used for running overnight automated backup jobs and will also be used for lot of video conversions, so gives me freedom to configure a lot of different stuff rather then just a specialized device.

hm, if you're gonna make it do video conversions , get something brawny- not too much RAM, but lotsa processing power , and, for the backup RAID if you can manage it :eek:hyeah:

Its quite cheap these days considering HDD prices these days , and mobos have RAID support. ( PS for Raid, get the 690G - the nvidia RAID is still a bit buggy. 690G's RAID works fine - a friend of mine is using it :) )
