National anthem in cinema halls : how frequent ?

I watch most of my movies at home and it took "The Datk Knight" to take me to a hall. When I went to the IMAX theater at Pacific Mall in Ghaziabad, I was surprised to see the national anthem notice come up on the screen. I immediately sprang to my feet, as did everybody else. I gazed around me and honestly couldn't see anybody slouching. The anthem was sung by Lata and Asha and it sounded really sweet and it soared my spirits :)

As a one time experience it was wonderful but I couldn't help wonder, is it a usual practice in cinema halls ? And further, would i feel as spirited about it if i were to watch say ten movies a month ? And if one starts questioning the validity of playing national anthem in cinema halls, does it make him any less of a patriot ?

Would like to hear what others think about it.

I was told by my friend , that u DO NOT stand up IF the National Anthem is being sung under a roof.
i still have to verify this claim of his, but he was adamant abt the info and so has always been a pretty dodgy situation for me ever since.
Still to verify these:
[RULES]
1. Always be in attention position during the National Anthem.
2. In some countries people use to keep their right hand fist on the heart while National anthem; this is not allowed for Indian National Anthem.
3. National anthem if started then should be completed in anyways.
4. National anthem could not be sung under roof. National anthem should always be sung in open area under the sky.
5. Never use (it) for National Anthem while writing about National Anthem.

^ Has your friend seen the beginning of Lok Sabha session.....

or address by President in Rajya Sabha

I guess it depends upon the theater you go to.. some play it.. some dont.

i've heard the national anthem being played whenever ive gone to Fun Cinemas here in Andheri.. they have this version specially made for them by Bharat-Bala... awesome work on that.

yea.. :)
Its not a session, its a joke.. with ppl doing wotever they please.
and things ranging from mics, shoes and recently bundles of currency notes.. u can expect anything in our sessions.

And i did mentioned, i still have to verify those rules.
Maybe somebody here wd be enlightened enuf to pass on the info to all of us.

Still they are running the country.... and a protocol is always followed when a session starts....

RUNNING u said? Surely that was a Typo for RUINING
i dont think majority of the netas have got an iota of a brain in them.

Miraculously, India is marching ahead.. very few learned ppl holding vital positions.

^^ u get the idea ....:bleh:....

National anthem plays for 52 seconds
Standing for it for 10 days in a month or 30 days in a month would never make less spirited....

I don't know how true is that but speaking of myself, I cannot remain sitting when the national anthem is playing even if there were some exemption under some rule. Not sure but i really doubt any such exemption exists at all.

Which takes us back to the question : is playing the anthem in halls insensitive ? Is it really necessary to make people, including women/children/senior citizen, stand up and pay homage to the nation when the have come to watch a movie ?

Its not specially made for a cinema, its a release on CD for Times of India in 1997 celebrating 50 years of Independence.

I'm pretty sure since Kanika Bharat is my aunt ;)

IMO it's a good thing..infact very much necessary.though pregnant women/senior citizens need not really stand up if it's difficult for them.

but for others it's makes them realize that there is something called as national anthem..and it can be sung other than 26th jan and 15th august.

atleast i feel a high spirited, a sense of pride and love for my country when i hear it. no matter how good\bad the nation's leaders are.

They play it most of the time i've been to theatre. The bharatbala version.

As much as i like it, i have to say that it is NOT how an anthem should be sung. All the singers are throwing extra sur and harkate, and then all the singers including rahman making too many movements.. lata-asha showing sisterly love, etc.. well this is not the way to sing our national anthem at least not how i was taught in schools etc.

Let's not mix a national anthem with national song.

as far as i know, ur not supposed to play the national anthem in a closed space or under a roof, it should always be out in the open,

yea they played in bangalore too, when i saw dark knight

maybe they put it cos they tought we'll start hating indian movies after watching that movie:S

# Mass Singing of the Anthem

1. The full version of the Anthem shall be played accompanied by mass singing on the following occasions: -

1. On the unfurling of the National Flag, on cultural occasions or ceremonial functions other than parades. (This could be arranged by having a choir or adequate size, suitably stationed, which would be trained to coordinate its singing with the band etc. There should be an adequate public audition system so that the gathering in various enclosures can sing in unison with the choir);

2. On arrival of the President at any Government or Public function (but excluding formal State functions and mess functions) and also immediately before his departure from such functions.

2. On all occasions when the National Anthem is sung, the full version shall be recited accompanied by mass singing.

3. The Anthem may be sung on occasions which, although not strictly ceremonial, are nevertheless invested with significance because of the presence of Ministers etc. The singing of the Anthem on such occasions (with or without the accompaniment of an instruments) accompanied by mass singing is desirable.

4. It is not possible to give an exhaustive list of occasions on which the singing (as distinct from playing) of the Anthem can be permitted. But there is no objection to the singing of the Anthem accompanied by mass singing so long as it is done with due respect as a salutation to the motherland and proper decorum is maintained.

5. In all schools, the day's work may begin with community singing of the anthem. School authorities should make adequate provision in their programmes for popularising the singing of the Anthem and promoting respect for the National Flag among students.

# General

1. Whenever the Anthem is sung or played, the audience shall stand to attention. However, when in the course of a newsreel or documentary the Anthem is played as a part of the film, it is not expected of the audience to stand as standing is bound to interrupt the exhibition of the film and would create disorder and confusion rather than add to the dignity of the Anthem.

2. As in the case of the flying of the National Flag, it has been left to the good sense of the people not to indulge in indiscriminate singing or playing of the Anthem.

This is a curious development, i've never experienced it yet, then again i last went to the flicks like 2 yrs back.

Looking at the writeup and can't figure out the connection, however this movie scores a whopping 9.5 :O
can't help thinking its cos of Heath Ledger, poor sod, ain't gonna see him around much longer

I do remember this being a fixture for every damn sport event (domestic ones) in the US, it got tiring very quick.

I have been observing this since a very long time now. It's a common practice now-a-days in most cinemas. And yes I do stand up during the anthem & pay my salutations towards the end.:)

whoa... is she?

the thing is.. ive seen most of their productions nd ive seen this one only at Fun-cinemas.. also, the credits mention that it was specially made for Fun Cinemas.

They play it most of the time i've been to theatre. The bharatbala version.

This is not the version i'm referring to.

the one i'm talking about involves the Army in places like(i guess) Siachen, Kargil, etc.. basically mountainous places, where they where arctic gear and salute the flag.. they have shots of a choppers doing a flypast nd stuff.. very nice :)

National Anthem is 52 seconds .. but the Lata and Asha version they play in halls is around 1:42 ... and that i feel is nonsense ... as you cant just change the timings of the national anthem ... soon they would be playing some remix of the national anthem ... that is 3 minutes long ... WTH ....
