ned urgent help on iphone 4

hello friends i am in urgent need of help . the situation goes as--

i am getting an apple iphone 4 from one of my friends friend . he has 16gb model of i phone , he claims that its a factory unlocked phone but as i am new to this iphone thing , i am not able to judge whether its a factory unlocked or software unlocked. the phone is on 4.0.2 and is working perfectly with all sims . that i will check at the time of purchase
any idead so that i can check about its authenticity

^^ if it's factory unlocked, then it will run with all sims on the latest iOS version 4.3.1(i think).

Be there when the update takes place and see if it's legit. If he's trying to cheat you, then edit your post, he isnt a friend.

he is my friends friend (or maybe a known one), thats why i am looking a way to confirm

i will go and take the phone from him , and there is no internet connectivity at his place . i am looking for any way that can confirm the authenticity by looking or doing something in the phone there only
