Didn't wanted to create a new thread for this one, but had no option.

My friends in US wants a DX9 based lappy real fast. He wants atleast Nvidia 7600 GO chipset for gaming. 7800 or 7900 Gs would do no harm either.

Also, he doesn't want Windows Vista.

So, are there any alternatives available with following options:

1) 15.4 inch screen

2) Nvidia 7600 Go/7800/7900 Go Chipset

3) Windows XP preferred.

Please reply soon.

I wasn't able to get any details of HP dv6314, @kkishere please provide me a link for that :)

@Ero-Sannin, Dell XPS will be out of his budget i think.

@Deepak, most Asus A8 series lappy have ATI graphics card and 14 inch screen. If u can find one with 15 inch screen and Nvidia chipset, it'll be gr8.

I am also not sure about Asus laptops in general. Are they good?

I searched the Asus US site and found the Asus G1 model with Nvidia 7700 GO.

His budget is around $1000, can be stretched to max $1100.

Asus A8 series are good gaming laptops with X1700 card and c2d...comes with 1gig....add another gig n u r set...I own one...The only downside being poor battery life. Also not recomended to keep this on ur lap while gaming...u can feel it getting uncomf warm...

good deal at newegg for abt 1250$

For the spec u mention u need a budget of 1200$ atleast...

i don think u shud go for the hp one stated above coz its got a 7400 go which is obviously better thn onboard but still not tht powerful for gamking...as u hav stated stick to 7600gt and above.....infact i wud say go for dell 1520 wid 8600m gt ......i know u want a dx9 based one but theres no harm if u r gettin a dx10 based one for the same price rt??? run 8600gt on xp no probs and better performance than 7400 and 7600

@Vij, he can't go for ATI dude bcoz he wants to install GNU/Linux on his lappy too.

@Atg, i also recommended Dell 1520 to him, but he is confused with his budget. I searched around the internet and found these options:

1) Toshiba:

Toshiba Satellite P200/P205: Core 2 Duo, Vista, 1 GB RAM, 17 inch screen, nVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7600

Link: Satellite P200-ST2071 - Toshiba Laptop

Price: $1040

2) HP:

A) HP Pavilion DV6000t: Core 2 Duo, Vista, 2 GB RAM, 15.4 inch screen, nVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400, webcam, 120GB harddisk

Link: Buy HP Pavilion dv6000t series, HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs and Laptop Computers direct from the HP Home & Home Office Store

You can customize the lappy at the link given above

Price: $978

This one (given below) is DirectX 10

B) HP Pavilion DV6500t: Core 2 Duo, Vista, 2 GB RAM, 15.4 inch screen, nVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS, webcam, 160GB harddisk, Fingerprint Reader

Link: Buy HP Pavilion dv6500t series, HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs and Laptop Computers direct from the HP Home & Home Office Store

Price: $1140
This Dx10 model for $1140 with 2 GB RAM is a steal. The only problem is the chipset i.e. Nvidia 8400M GS. I seriously doubt that it would be good in gaming. That’s why I suggested 8600M GT to my friend.

3) Acer Aspire 9120: Core 2 Duo, Vista, 2 GB RAM, 15.4 inch screen, nVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7600, webcam, 120GB harddisk

Link: Products & Services - Notebooks

Price: Unknown

4) Asus G1: Core 2 Duo, Vista, 2 GB RAM, 15.4 inch screen, nVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7700, 160GB harddisk

Link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

Price: Unknown

Thanks to everyone for helping me out. Now, it's upto my friend. I have given the above options to him but my best recommendation to him is Dell Inspiron 1520.

Thanks Vij! But instead of getting this for $1370, Dell 1520 is a much sweeter deal. I customized it with Nvidia 8600M Gt and 2GB RAM and total was $1400.

I am pressing hard to my friend to buy 1520, lets wait and watch

Yes, true...though 8600M will in all prob be 80% of 7700Go 512MB

The fastest DirectX 9 GPU u can get for the 15.4" is the Nvidia 7700 and from ATI its the X1700. Both are capable of playing most games out there at medium to high graphic settings. However the fastest GPU at the moment for the 15.4" is the 8600M GT and below that the 8600M GS..

The Dell inspiron 1520 has pretty good specs and can be configured with the 8600M GT. But maybe overshoot ur budget by a little..

The Asus G1 costs around 1600$..

You could also look at the Asus F3JP (around 1200$) or the Asus F3SV (1400$). Regarding your query on how Asus laptops are, i would say they are very good with much better build quality then the Dell Inspiron series and come with a 2 year global warranty.

Dont go for that "Open Box" newegg deal. They'r just messed up..

Depends. Usually open box deals are mostly returned stuff which have been inspected for any damage before putting back on shelf. And since Newegg is a reputed seller, there shouldnt be a problem as warranty is the same.

However if u are buying from US and bringin to India immed, it would be a good suggestion to skip the open box deals as u dont want to push that maybe 1% chance that it may have a pblm and wud hav to send it bac..
